This movie was SO not what I was expecting. — The music was unexpected in a good way for me (but if you're one of those people who gets really annoyed by anachronisms, I'm telling you, the music will bug you.) The sets, costumes, and camerawork were brilliant, and I really liked the casting. I was very interested in this movie from the beginning, but when I finally caught it I was quite disappointed. That is not to say that the characters were not exquisite and beautifully filmed, but the final product together was not the action film, romance, or comedy some people expected. It took the long story, kept it long and while the beginning and end I liked, the middle left something to be desired. Eye candy to behold. For anyone who loves period filming and costuming, there is none to surpass this one. The childlike innocence of Marie who never saw the destruction the royalty's decadence was causing made for a powerful contrast and morality lesson to those now living in voluptuous decadence without a care for the less fortunate.  That could have been more stressed and developed as a subplot.
