With all the renewed interest in Marie Antoinette since the movie, you really should read Antonia Fraser's book, Marie Antoinette: The Journey.  It gives such insight into how the terrible situation happened.  A lot of it was not her fault.

The French system of rewarding and supporting the royal family and other aristocracy was at the base of the fall of the royal couple.  Too many people felt were too entitled too much.  Does this entitlement sound familar in our society?

The book is an wonderful adventure for anyone who enjoys historical novels.  You get such a sense of being in the period and a lot of the nonsence you thought you knew about her is swept away.
