I bought us a box of Margaritaville Captain's Calamari Strips - mostly because I'm a big Jimmy Buffett fan. I like his restaurants - Margaritaville. Figured these new frozen foods had to be pretty decent. He rocks, in all ways, on most things.
Something fell in the floor when I opened the box. It was a packet that said ONLY Margaritaville. On the front of the box, it says "Creole Remoulade Dippin Sauce. I figured this must be it. I wasn't sure whether to pour this one the calamari while it was cooking or not, but the "dippin" part made me decide to wait and use it like ketchup.
These just heat a few minutes like fish sticks. They're little skinny things, but did you ever see a really fat, old squid. Well, did you ever see a squid at all? I figure OK. I can cook up some sea sticks that look kind of like Cheese Doodles.
I pulled them out when they looked done. Not so hard.
I asked the boys what they thought. They both voted that they tasted like kind of dry and skimpy fish sticks. The younger one has never had squid. The older one has. I didn't think they really tasted like fish sticks, but they didn't really taste like squid either. They tasted more like breading. I like breading. The boys do. We weren't in a major snit.
The boys turned up both their noses about that sauce. I tried it. Yum. That was good. It was for the world like McDonald's special sauce with some horseradish. I wouldn't mind buying a bottle of that stuff.
The Margaritaville calamari was OK. It wasn't bad. It wasn't great. The sauce was my favorite, but the boys won't even try it. They don't like the color.
Doubt I'll buy these again. They were just so-so.
