March of the Penguins 2005 Review Summary

March of the Penguins is "an awe inspiring movie that fundamentally changes your understanding of how a particular species survives in a remote corner of our planet." With narration from the familiar voice of Morgan Freeman, Viewpoints moviegoers are tempted to see the penguins as cute arctic birds, but seeing the realities of their living conditions, we see March of the Penguins is "not a fairy tale, but a real circle of life, fascinating, although cruel at times" This documentary isn't always "for the tender-hearted" or young children, because of its realistic look at life in the Arctic Circle, and children might be better served seeing Surf's Up. If March of the Penguins "doesn't put life into perspective for you nothing will."

This movie had my kids (ages 5,7 & 9) rivited to the screen. It is not every day that one sees an awe inspiring movie that fundamentally changes your understanding of how a particular species survives in a remote corner of our planet. This is what The March of the Penguins is all about.

I am a softie:  I admit it right up front.  I get very upset when I see roadkill.  I relocate spiders.   I can't stand to watch accidents replayed.    But that's not always a bad thing, just when you have a beastie in your house.  So when I mentioned to my girlfriend that I nearly cried during...

Bottom-Line: If this movie doesn't put life into perspective for you nothing will.  And here is a little tip: every time your life needs a little jolt of perspective, watch this movie!

Nature is cold, calculating, and unforgiving.  Even we humans entrenched deep within our insulated lives (should) have come to that realization; live is not fair, nor was it meant to be.  Life is what it is and each creature on the planet has to do what it needs to survive and promulgate the species often time at the expense of the living.  This lesson is born out in the much lauded March of the Penguins (2005),...

The footage of the Penguins is incredible.

They are 'cute' particularly since we get to watch them in a warm theater or at home and don't have to smell 'em either.

The narration superbly done in the English version by Morgan Freeman  also turns the animals into loveable Disney-esque characters which is a little too much of a stretch for me, particularly if you watch the fascinating not to be missed making of feature on the DVD. (The English narration script is by Jordan Roberts but I don't know how different it is from the original French one by Luc Jacquet)

Still this is a crowd pleasing, oscar...

I didn't think I would like March of the Penguins. I am not much for what I thought was going to be an animated movie and I am not much of a G rated movie lover. I did love March of the Penguins. In a sentence if you love nature, amazing photography, the miracles of life, love, and animals you will want to watch the March of the Penguins.

This is the kind of movie you can see over and over again. It's is a story of thousands of emperor penguins who make a 70-mile trek to find their mate. These beautiful animals don't fly and although they are aquatic they don't swim as we know it. They walk all...

March of the Penguins (2005)

What is it?
March of the Penguins
is a documentary about Penguins!  Narrated by Morgan Freeman,  this movie transforms us into the world of penguins.

Every year penguins travel to their breeding grounds to mate, hatch eggs, raise their babies and make their way back home.
Along the way, they face predators, get sick, and lose the group and get lost.
But with the bad, there is much more good.  Baby "chicks" are born and it's so touching to see the Daddy penguin take care of them.

My Viewpoint!
We came across March of the Penguins on the Discovery Channel and was captivated. ...

When this movie first came out, I was convinced it was yet another boring animal documentary.  One of those with the monotone narrator that practically puts you to sleep.  When I finally rented this movie I was very surprised how wrong I had been.  The narration by Morgan Freeman was spectacular.  He made it fun and captivating, not monotone and boring.

This movie takes you through a year in the life of a penguin.  It shows how much these animals go through just to mate every year.  It was amazing to learn about everything the penguins go through and how hard they work.  They walk hundreds...

March of the Penguins is undoubtably compelling, beautifully shot, and features those adorable penguins! Morgan Freeman offers up a forceful narration, and it's hard not to believe every word he says. But beyond the cute fluff, the grueling winters, the terrific adversaty these penguins face simply to survive, is the fact that they neglect to remind the audience - THEY ARE NOT HUMAN, All the anthropomorphizing in the world will not change the fact that they're BIRDS. Painting a picture of them as thinking, feeling, loving animals is - while not wrong, per se, certainly inaccurate. It is impossible... review »

Morgan Freeman narrates this beautiful, moving, sometimes sad, often beautiful documentary (that actually does well on the big screen). There are no big stars in this, just thousands of the cutest most beautiful little guys you could think of. They are amazing animals and this depicts the life cycle of them and the way they live facing brutally cold conditions, attacks by seals, and the heartbreak they suffer (like humans) when chicks die or are taken from them. This is brilliant and unlike any other documentary I've seen. It captivated me from start to end and it's a must see. Listening to Morgan... review »

A mostly-brilliant animal movie. The 70-mile (!) trek on foot and belly from sea to breeding ground, the almost unbearable intimacy of courtship, the shifting patterns of a crowd of males during a blizzard, the hard truth of a mother getting whisked away by a leopard seal, the colors--I think for most people watching, these will outweigh the minuses: sentimental, light-on-facts narration (typified on the movie poster: "In the harshest place on Earth, love finds a way") and a sugary, intrusive new-agey score. These choices probably stem from the producers' terror of losing younger audiences, and... review »

It is an amazing documentary that is presented more as a story.  A wonderful educational experience for young and old alike.  We watch a lot of animal documentaries and my family has learned, not only facts, but an appreciation of the natural world.  This film is very moving and may be too intense for very sensitive children and not for young children, but is an opportunity for families to discuss life and death, hardship, triumph and how truly amazing nature is.  A wonderful example of animal adaptation, survival and the ultimate sacrifice parents make for their young and their species.

This movie was rather disappointing. With all the hype I'd heard, I expected a great movie.  Instead, it was...boring.  I love penguins. I collect penguins. I did not like this movie.  It was very much a documentary.  It had great pictures and camera work, but the rest was not interesting.  I watched it with my parents & husband and by the end we were all making up our own words and storyline.  It was more interesting that way.  If you are looking to learn something about penguins, this might be a good movie, but if you want to be entertained, this won't do it!

I chose to watch March of the Penguins because others had recommended it and penguins always fascinated me.  As a lover of all animals and one who likes to learn about their real lives, I was intrigued.  I was also impressed by the commitment the men who filmed this had made to the film and the animals themselves.  I will say that if you are squeamish about the realities of nature, you might not want to see this and it is definitely not a film for small children.  However, if you love animals and are interested in the way they survive, this is a great film.

I heard about this documentary before it came out and was really looking forward to seeing it. Others said how good it was. Needless to say, I was very dissapointed.  It was so boring and slow. I'm an animal lover, but watching penguins walk on ice or slide on ice is interesting one time, if that.  I thought it was informative, sad in some parts, and gave us a good look at the life of a penguin. But overall I would not recommend it because I think it'll put you to sleep. Boring and slow!
