March of the Penguins 2005 —

A mostly-brilliant animal movie. The 70-mile (!) trek on foot and belly from sea to breeding ground, the almost unbearable intimacy of courtship, the shifting patterns of a crowd of males during a blizzard, the hard truth of a mother getting whisked away by a leopard seal, the colors--I think for most people watching, these will outweigh the minuses: sentimental, light-on-facts narration (typified on the movie poster: "In the harshest place on Earth, love finds a way") and a sugary, intrusive new-agey score. These choices probably stem from the producers' terror of losing younger audiences, and they probably backfire. (When I was a kid I hated it when adults talked cutesy to me.)
