Mamma Mia! (2008 movie) Review Summary

Mamma Mia! "brings back good fun music." Meryl Streep stars as a mother that is unsure of the paternity of her grown daughter, knowing it is one of three men (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgard). She earns high praise for her singing and comedic talents, as she's normally known for more serious films such as Lions for Lambs. Yet, the real star of this film is the music, all of it culled from the catalogs of ABBA, prompting reviewers to report it made them want to "dance in the aisles" of the theater. Based on the Broadway play by the same name, reviewers report Mamma Mia! to be the funniest movie seen in a long time, despite an ending that was "kind of expected." Even those that don't like musicals found themselves liking Mamma Mia! A few reviewers felt the buildup of this movie didn't meet with their expectations.

My husband and I decided to go see Mama Mia last minute and while I thought the movie Mama Mia was totally cheesey-- I also thought it was super cute. In fact, it made me chuckle out loud a couple of times. You cant possibly go see Mama Mia and be in a bad mood coming out. — However, if you… read full review »

Mamma Mia! looked fun from the previews.  First, we didn't know it was going to be a musical.  Second, we didn't really want it to be a musical! — — Meryl Streep was good as the lead actress, but as lead vocal, not quite doing it for me.  Neither was Pierce Brosnan -- he… read full review »

I went to see Mamma Mia today with one of my favorite non-chicks - my teenage son. He is a good sport, and I took him out to eat Mexcican and to the hardware store. So, it was me, the kid, and the white haired ladies. Seems Monday is senior day at our local cinemas. My son figured that part out. — Mamma Mia is kind of the sequel to Grease. OK. Not exactly. But, it's a musical and fun. Instead of a teen musical like Grease when I was young, this is more of a forty-something musical but with a teen player as well. — Donna is planning for her daughter's wedding, and Sophie (the… read full review »

As my tag said, I'm not much of a musical fan, but I really loved this movie!  It's great to go with a girlfriend as it is mainly focused towards females, but it catered to a wide variety of age groups in my opinion.  The soundtrack is great and the actors in the movie were great.  Pierce Bronson singing was horrible, but it made the movie more enjoyable (at least for… read full review »

You don't have to be a woman to love "Mama Mia," the recently released movie.  If you are a "Boomer;" have a  child (particularly a daughter, but not essential); like Meryl Streep and Christine Baranski; saw "Mean Girls," AND/OR find Pierce Brosnon "eye candy," (regardless of his awful singing voice), this is the movie for you! And no, my husband didn't come out of this movie raving about how wonderful it is, but he did go day 1; saw 10 other guys in the theater, and was tapping out the beat of "Dancing Queen" with his toe as he sat watching. — I loved this movie, (56 year… read full review »

Mamma Mia is about a young lady(Amanda Seyfried) who is about to get married, but before she walks down the isle, she wants to find her father. She thinks that if she finds her father she will know who she is. Sounds kind of dull, right? It gets better! During the movie they sing songs by ABBA(Dancing Queen etc...). I was just about to dance in the isle's! Anyway, you will laugh out loud A LOT!!! Mainly by Donna's(Meryl Streep) two dysfunctional best friends. Every girl I know would LOVE this chick flick!!! Plus if you think Peirce Brosnan is GORGEOUS, you get to see his… read full review »

I love Abba anyway, but this movie "Mamma Mia" is wonderful!  Meryl Streep is amazing as an actress and will not disapoint in this movie either.  The music is moving and makes you want to sing along, not to mention tap your feet!  I cannot wait until it comes out on video so I can watch it again and again!  I highly recommend this movie to everyone who is a "dancing… read full review »

I had not heard about Mama Mia until I watched a not so favorable review on the news.  But the clips looked so funny I called my mom up to go watch it.   It has to be the funniest movie I have seen in a long time!   Now I have not seen the musical so I was not sitting there trying to point out everything wrong with it. —    If you are looking for thatre quality voice talent you may be a little disappointed but they were pretty good and it made it more realistic that they were not perfect.   Again don't go to the movie… read full review »

I have to admit it: the trailers for Mama Mia had me hooked. It looked like a lot of fun and I wasn't disappointed. It reminded me of the golden era of the movie musicals: no plot to speak of, what little plot there was revolved around romance, lots of singable tunes (and nostalgia for those of us of a certain age), big dance numbers, and you leave the theater with a smile on your face. Meryl Streep was amazing not only in her acting (only an actress of her caliber could give this thin plot some substance) but in her singing: her voice is wonderful and she can really sell a song. What is MTV… read full review »

I watched the play on broadway twice.  It was great.  I know that seeing something live is always going to be better than any movie that can be made.   I had low expectations going in, but was still disappointed. — — This is a musical.  When they created the movie they hired actors/actresses that were not musically talented.   Their singing was mediocre at best.  I was embarassed at how bad some of the performances were.   Meryl Streep was dressed like a pig farmer the entire film wearing these overalls that made her look old, fat and… read full review »

Mama Mia is one of the best films that I have seen lately.  I don't go to the movies very often, but this looked good since I am a huge fan of musicals.  They merged the Abba music extremely well in with the storyline and the singing of the leads were excellent.  The setting of the movie was a girl who is about to get married wants her dad to give her away.  Except that she does not know who her dad is, but her mother kept a diary that said who were the likely three candidates that she slept with the summer before she was born.  The daughter sends invites to the three… read full review »

I saw Mamma Mia a couple weeks ago and was surprised how much I really enjoyed it.  ABBAs music was alway fun and mostly upbeat.   I wish I had seen the broadway play, and I dont really care for plays.   They made a cute, not intellectual but very cute move, while stringing a good many of Abbas songs in there. Meryl Streep was surprising as a musical and comedic actress and Christine Baranski was her normal acidically funny costar.  Who can resist Pierce in tights?  The ending was kind of expected but did put one small surprise at the… read full review »

I had high hopes for this movie. Perhaps they were too high and that's why I was let down. The music was great, and parts were hilarious. But other parts I thought were inappropriate and not necessary for entertainment. I really grew to dispise Meryl Streep's character in this movie, though I liked Sophie, and the actress who played her, as well as her fiance. I must admit the music was fun, and I found myself singing along (in my head). Overall, I just had mixed reviews. I think if you go into it expecting great things, you will be disapointed. But go into it with no expectations, and you… read full review »

From the time i saw the trailer for this movie, i was dieing to watch it.  The day this movie was out, i was waiting on the line for near to an hour in order to get a decent sit.  As the movie started, my friends started complaining how i am making them watch a stupid movie.  The movie has a stupid story, has too many old people dancing around, and was too damn cheesy.  But somehow at i really enjoyed the movie and i know my friends did too.  This movie might not have a purpose behind it and stupid as hell, but it is one of the movies that can make people laugh and… read full review »
