Makeyourownjeans.com Custom Jeans —

As a 5'10" woman with spectacularly long legs and a shorter than average waist, finding jeans that fit has been a decades-long obsession.   If the inseam is long enough to reach the floor, then the waistband ends up around my ribcage.  If I find a pair that fit my slim-but-wide midsection, then I have an abundance of excess denim dangling from my hips and tush.

And yes, I'm acquainted with all the Glamour Dos & Don'ts, the What Not To Wears, and the various daytime Makeover shows.  But no one ever addresses what to do when you have opposing body issues, i.e. an ample bosom and a short waist; or long legs and a short rise.  I know what you're thinking:  buy a pair of jeans off the rack and have them professionally tailored.  But as a budget-conscious shopper, I've always resisted that approach.  Mind you, I don't suffer from poor body image; I just want to own at least one pair of jeans that I'm not constantly tugging and adjusting.  Jeans that fit. Comfortably.

It was this obsession that led me to the website that would change the way I feel about jeans forever.  I discovered Makeyourownjeans.com during a spur-of-the-moment search for custom jeans.    I had caught the tail-end segment of a morning news show about a web site that specializes in affordable custom jeans.  I didn't catch the name of the site, so I just did a Google search.

The link led me to makeyourownjeans.com, the web presence of the India-based Harry Fashion, a clothier that doesn't tailor your jeans, but actually creates them to your own measurements.  You pick the weight and type of denim (cross-hatch, ring-spun, lightweight stretch etc.), gender (men's or women's), style (boot cut, straight leg, relaxed fit, etc.), and wash (scraped, stone, faded, mechanic black finish, etc.).  Then you supply the measurements:  waist, seat, outer length, front rise, back rise, and any special instructions or add-ons.   And for $45 plus $15 shipping to the U.S., you too will have a pair of custom made jeans.  The entire process took a little less than two weeks from order to delivery.

Since I'm always cautious about making purchases from unknown websites, I looked the site over with a fine-toothed comb before I decided to buy.  I discovered that Harry Fashion is an Ebay Power Seller with overwhelming positive feedback.  I read the testimonials from satisfied customers which were also quite positive.  Finally, I decided to take a chance by ordering just one pair of jeans.  I figured if I had a great experience I could always buy more, or if I goofed on my measurements, I could tweak them for repeat orders.

Well, I am pleased to report that my experience was top notch.   I measured several times to ensure accuracy, made my selections and placed my order.  I was kept informed about the status of my order, and when the jeans arrived I was thrilled by the quality of both the material and the workmanship.

Makeyourownjeans.com has made me true believer.  I now own 2 more pairs of jeans and will return for more.  For the first time in my life, I can wear a pair of jeans that fit.  Comfortably.

In response to JessieMott's comment from Dec 18, 2009 at 5:06PM:

I'm so glad they worked for you! It really is horrible not having a standard figure and trying to fit into uncomfortable clothes. It sounds like Makeyourownjeans.com is hit-or-miss though. Some people have a terrific experience, and others are extremely disappointed. I would suggest people consider buying through Ebay (seller name: Harry Fashion). They have a 100% positive reputation there, and if you have a bad experience you can at least submit a refund claim through PayPal. Glad there are sites like Viewpoints where people can share their experiences, good and bad. Thanks for commenting. :)

In response to nicolebrwn's comment from Jul 31, 2009 at 10:13AM:

I just posted a review without reading the others (mea culpa), but I just wanted to add that because of my unfortunate figure, I too had the dreaded muffin top, from trying to squelsh my too-wide waist into a pair of standard-issue jeans. It's now a thing of the past, and a very good riddance to it. I should have mentioned it in my review! Apart from how gross it looks, it's also really uncomfortable.

JessieMott wrote on Dec 18, 2009 at 5:06PM

I love these jeans. I have an impossible body. I'm female, but my waist and hips measure the same. That's my personal tragedy, but what was really tragic was how I looked in standard-fit jeans. I had to make trade-offs, and the invevitable result was that the jeans were too tight in the waist, whilst you could have almost fitted another human being into the hips/butt section.

These jeans fit perfectly - well, they ought to, with all the measurements they use. The denim is high-quality and has withstood many washes.

When I first googled "custom-made jeans" a couple of site popped up. I ordered from both. One was Italian based, I think. I ordered from both sites. The jeans from India arrived promptly and fit perfectly. The Italian jeans (which cost about twice the amount) arrived weeks later and did not fit.

As to customer service, I have had only one run-in with them. I had asked for the free samples of suit fabrics, and they did not arrive with the order. I emailed them to say so, and got a snippy comment that "Of course they arrived; we check every order." I sent back an equally snippy response asking why on earth I would want to lie about this, and haven't you heard that the customer is always right?

They apologized the next day and sent the free samples they had forgotten the first time around.

I 100% endorse LoveisJoy's recommendation. Not only did I get jeans that fit my awkward body shape, but I also got to design every feature, right down to the degree of flare I wanted.

Thanks. Unfortunately it sounds like many folks had an entirely different experience than I did. But I can only write from my perspective. And I was genuinely pleased and completely satisfied with all of my jeans purchases.

This is a great review and very tempting product.

This company has the worst customer service i have ever encountered. i was very excited to get my first pair made to my specifications. i have no luck in department stores finding jeans that fit properly. Jeans arrived were several inches smaller than those i ordered in ever dimension. They have refused a return or refund. i am stuck with a $60.00 pair of children's jeans. I will never buy from this company again.

I'm extremely anal about how my clothing fit - it must fit perfectly.
I'm petite and heavy with big hips. I tried MYOJ.
I was skeptical about the chance that buying jeans online would be worth it. I pretty much expected that the quality would be bad.
However i was pleasantly surprised - They fit like a glove.
The denim is very soft and they are well stiched. The wash is unique and craftsmenship is impressive.
These jeans made me look slim and sexy!
Finally,I am rid of the dreaded "muffin top"! My husband thinks I lost 10 lbs!
I can't count how much money I've spent on other jeans that didn't fit right they would fit me in the waist but no where else or fit me everywhere but not in the waist.
I will not purchase jeans from another store while www.makeyourownjeans.com exists because their jeans are the best I've ever purchased (and I have purchased a lot of jeans prior to MYOJ).

MakeYourJeans is the only place I now get jeans and cargo pants now. The quality is exceptional. I'm amazed at how long these jeans last and the fit is usually very good. The pants fit SOOO well, and it its just plain and simple PERFECT! The service is excellent. You receive notices about "going into production" and being shipped. I also believe they are very responsive to special requests though the service and quality alone will keep me coming back regardless. If you haven't tried them,.you are missing out on the best way to get custom jeans.

My entire life, I have had a hard time finding jeans that just fit! I have a shorter torso and longer legs, and everything I found in stores didn't work.

From designer jeans to super market jeans-nothing I found was long enough or fit well enough.

Then, using a search engine, I found makeyourownjeans.com and literally everything changed.

Waiting for my personal jeans to arrive was excruciating but well worth the wait.

My jeans finally fit! I can dress my jeans up or down, wear heels with them, and be comfortable in them without looking like I have high-waters on.

Don't be afraid to make your own jeans - they are for YOU and they fit like a glove and actually appear slimming because you're not shoving yourself into jeans that don't fir, or being swallowed in jeans too big.

LoveisJoy wrote on Jul 1, 2009 at 8:11PM

Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience. Even though all of my jeans turned out so well, I will now think twice before placing another order. I don't like hearing that their customer service is so poor when something does go wrong. Thanks for sharing your story.

what you guys are talking abt, makeyourownjeans.com?
any body can make an excellent web site with the excellent fake reviews..... big deal?
Do you trust websites from the third world?

IF this site is so excellent why do not they have return policy.
specially where there is no indian consumer protection law.

I bought two cargo pants... Finally what a crap arrived at my home in New York...
Believe me .. I even did not try single time....

Boot CUT Cargo pants had holes....
Stitching very poor... Cloth quality is very very poor....
No comparison with GAP or BANANA REPUBLIC.

I wasted $130 for tow pants....
I could have arranged myself from India these kind of work for a small amount $10 since my family is in INDIA.

Bottom line... Looking for quality... do not do internet shopping from INDIA.

What a waste of money , I could have contributed that money to child support....

In response to DHAZE's comment from Jan 10, 2009 at 7:14PM:

I agree with you that anyone considering buying the jeans should understand that they don't accept returns if you're unhappy with the results. It was worth the gamble for me because I am so incredibly hard to fit, and luckily all of my orders turned out well. I'm honestly sorry that it didn't work out for you. Thanks for your valuable comments.

DHAZE wrote on Jan 10, 2009 at 7:14PM

Be careful ordering from these people -- if there is any problem with the jeans, you are completely out of luck.

The jeans I ordered were supposed to be a "deep dark wash". Unfortunately, the result is an oddly streaky, mottled 1980's acid wash. And, the rear pockets were placed right up against the side seams, not centered like they are on every other brand of jeans one can buy.

When I complained to the company, I was told that I should not rely on the photos nor the description of the color, and that they put the pockets were they did for technical reasons. They do not accept returns or have any interest in resolving problems.

I am out $65 since these are really really ugly. Do not order unless you are prepared for the crapshoot -- you may get something good, you may get something horrible. And, keep in mind that the color listed or described may have absolutely nothing to do with the final result.

This site sounds great. I am short, 5'4" with short legs and torso. Regular jeans are to long for me but petite jeans are to short. I'm going to site right now to check it out. Thanks.

silviyabirdy wrote on Jun 16, 2008 at 2:54PM

I got my first pair back in May.
That pair fit like a glove! I made a few adjustments to my new order of 2 pair (due to stretching of the jeans throughout the day) and they fit AWESOME!! OH MY GOODNESS!!

I am a 6' tall chick with 36" inseam 27 inch waist and a 39 inch Bootay!!!
I can NEVER find pants to fit.

Oh sure, I could go to Gap and find a pair that were long enough but when I brought em home and washed them IN COLD WATER and LINE dried them (and who wants to do all that to their jeans?) they always shrunk in the length.

PLUS, they never really fit MY body properly.

I love the low-cut jeans but I am so sick of my butt crack showing in low rise jeans.
With Makeyourownjeans.com I can get the low rise in the front and make the back rise high enough to cover the "area"!

Now when I put on my favorite pair of Gap Jeans they don't even feel good. My Seven jeans are the same way.
They bind or ride and just don't feel like my Makeyourownjeans.com jeans do.

I am donating my ill-fitting Gap and Seven jeans to the thrift store!! They just don't compare!!
Plus, the price of your jeans!!!!!
I hope your price stays where it is or you stay loyal to your customers. I can't believe it! $45 for a pair of jeans that are CUSTOM MADE!!!!!! I paid $200 for Seven jeans because of the length and they don't even fit good! NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!

I am going to post of photo of me in my jeans! Ladies! Believe me!!! You CAN get the low rise and also have BUTT CRACK coverage! Get your jeans here!! YOU will LOVE THEM!!!!!

Now, how about offering some trousers for us tall leggy women!!! I am desperate for dress pants that FIT that I don't have to alter!!

Love my jeans !!

Aimee-Godess wrote on May 30, 2008 at 12:21AM

They are wonderful, I read about them in Oprah's Magaize and have already placed a second order,
I absolutely love them, they fit amazingly, the material is great feeling i love them. I am a 6'2 female who wears a inseam of 38", and its is IMPOSSIBLE to find jeans that fit me well. Well i found my place...i plan on ordering enough that i have a pair for every day of the week. Customer service was great and professional, and delivery time was very quick!

In response to SINY's comment from Apr 6, 2008 at 2:21AM:

I'm sorry you had such a disappointing experience. My jeans came out perfectly (2 separate orders) and were delivered as promised. The company had nearly 100% positive ratings through Ebay at the time I ordered. Perhaps something has gone terribly wrong with the company since the time that I purchased my jeans. Thank you for sharing your viewpoint--you may help someone else avoid a similarly bad experience.

SINY wrote on Apr 6, 2008 at 2:21AM

I DO NOT AGREE with you! So far, I've been experiencing the opposite.
Two months ago, February 25, 2008, I oredered a pair of jeans from makeyourownjeans.com, and have yet to recieve the pair I had ordered!
Not only that, but I have not recieved any such feedback from the company informing me about the status of my order, in fact, I had to e-mail to three different addresses in order to get an answer that my jeans were in production, and this was three weeks ago!
I am VERY dissapointed and am convinced this is a scam, so until I recieve my EXTREMELY overdue shipment, I do not recommend this site to anyone!

selcric88 wrote on Mar 14, 2008 at 12:49PM

The jeans I received were a JOKE. Here are some of the comments I made in an email to them:

I received my jeans today and was very disappointed. First of all, they are wide-legged jeans when I asked for Skinny Tight Fit and specifically said I want them tight around the thigh in my description. Legs have a wider diameter at the top and then taper as they go down. A slim-fitting pair of jeans should follow this natural contour of the human body. Instead, they stay the exact diameter from top to bottom.

The pants are too large in almost every regard. The measurement around the bottom of the jeans is just simply longer than I asked for, and the length of the pants shorter. It is clear that makeyourownjeans does not understand the concept of slim and fitted jeans.

I wrote twice to them and got NO REPLY. What a scam.

In response to fosm's comment from Mar 8, 2008 at 11:11PM:

Wow...I am so sorry to hear this. I didn't submit an inseam measurement either, but all 3 pairs came out with the correct outer length. I'm glad you commented on your experience, because it will help others make the decision of whether or not to give the site a try. They worked perfectly for me, but sadly, it sounds like not everyone is having the same experience. Thanks for the comment.

fosm wrote on Mar 8, 2008 at 11:11PM

We took measurements as makeyourownjeans.com described on their web site. The "casual fit" jeans were too snug in the hips. The leg length was two 1/2 inches short. We would have liked to purchase more of their jeans, but they insist that we made the mistake in submitting incorrect measurements. They wrote back "Please understand as we make Jeans without seeing you so we totally rely on your measurements." and "If you wanted to give us the inseam measurements, you should have given it in the comment box of our product page." They gave the measuring instructions. They left it up to us to think of submitting an inseam measurement. They claim to know what they are doing and will adjust measurements if necessary. They do not own up to any error in interpreting the measurements they requested. We wrote to them that we'd buy a few more pair of jeans if they would remake the first pair. They did not respond favorably.

Thanks Libby! I can't believe how nice it is to have pants that actually fit! Not as revolutionary as inventing the wheel; but almost. :-)

I've been trying to find someone who has used this website before, as I'm interested in trying it out. My situation is the opposite - I'm short and overweight and I'm sick of taking huge hems on jeans. I'm so glad to read a review from someone who actually tried this out. I'll give it a go, myself, now! Thanks!

I'm totally going to check this place out as I am unspectacularly short and hard to fit so I have a hard time finding jeans that fit. Thanks so much for letting us know about this site! QVC has custom jeans as well but I have yet to check them out either.
