Banish back straps and back bulge with this new backless bra.
4 star rating

a creature of comfort, a believer in accentuating the positive, willing to try anything once, into trying new things, super body conscious
Pros

flatters the bustline, adjustable straps, foam cups lift and support, doesn't slip too much, looks good under tight T's too, decently priced, versatile, no straps at all in back

Cons
not the perfect solution but close, vigorous moves will make it slip, can't wear backless halters with this, may take some size adjusting

Quick View: if you are wondering, "Does this woman have to have every new thing invented?", the answer would be yes. Well, almost. I'll bypass the power tools. This bra was created on the show American Inventor and I was interested in how it could possibly fit and not slide around. I have a wedding to go to and a a very low backed dress to wear. That was a great reason to buy this bra. It's not perfect but it works!

About the Maidenform Breakthrough Backless Bra

Up until now, all we had for backless bras were those ones with crazy straps that zigzagged around the lower back or ... nothing. Now we women have an alternative. This bra is completely backless. It looks just like a regular underwire bra in the front with foam cups and adjustable straps. But in the back, there is NOTHING. Weird, huh?

I bought the nude color in my normal size. When the bra came, I laughed at it because it seemed so silly. However, I slipped it on and it fit pretty well. Because there is no back strap and no back hooks, the cups are a little loose on me. If I could adjust the back, they would be prefect. I don't think I would go down a cup size though since they are only very slightly roomy but I did order size down around in black (I went with a 34 instead of a 36). The straps adjust and go around the arms and connect to the bra. The bra has boning on the sides for support and it has silicone all along the front to keep it from slipping when you move.

It's not uncomfortable at all. When I first tried it on, I was afraid to move thinking the bra would shift and cause troubles but it didn't. Now, I couldn't go play volleyball in this thing but, for times when I need the backless look but don't want to go braless (I hate those low back strapped bras. I never get them right.), this bra does the trick.

It looks smooth under clothes and gives me lift that is natural looking. It will shift if you move around like crazy so, if you're going to catch the bride's bouquet, prepare to adjust the bra a bit after. As far as comfort, it's fine. It feels like a normal underwire bra in the front.

I have a backless halter and this bra won't work with it because the straps hook around my arms and show. But, other than that one shirt, this bra will work with any low back cut top or dress and will flatter the bust. Is it perfect? No. Does it do what it says it will without a ton of adjusting? Yes.

I like the bra well enough to have ordered it in black. I don't wear a lot of backless things but I do wear low back tops and have to push my back bra strap way down and keep at that the whole time to hide the strap. Not any more! The Maidenform Breakthrough Backless Bra eliminates all that hassle.

Again, I have to say that it is not perfect. If you move a lot, especially if you lift your arms a lot, it will shift slightly and you will have to adjust it. It could be that this bra is a tad big for me though so I have ordered a size 34C instead of 36C to see if that helps with the slight slippage I get when I lift my arms a lot. The clothing you wear makes a difference too. The tighter the top, the better this bra stays in place. It doesn't move an inch when I wear one of my tight tank tops - even if I do a lot of moving around. Looser fitting clothing will allow a bit more slippage when moving.

I tried this bra under some tight regular high backed shirts and guess what? No back bulge! My back looked smooth and seamless and shirts just looked a LOT better without the back strap there to cut my back in half. I never thought I would wear a backless bra with a regular figure hugging top but it does work well to give me a smooth, sleek back silhouette.

My Viewpoint

This bra is so hard to rate! If you get the right size and you don't plan to play basketball or tennis in the thing, it will serve you well. Maidenform says the bra will provide support for bigger busts and it comes in sizes up to 38DD but I don't know how it would wok for bustier women. I'm average and the bra is the best backless one out there. The ONLY backless one out there. Since I have nothing to compare it to of similar make, I am going with 4 stars because it is innovative, fits nicely, is VERY simple, gives me support and lift, and eliminates all back straps. It isn't perfect but it isn't a dud by any means. I recommend you try it but buy from a store you can return it if you don't like the fit. If you're between cup or strap sizes, order one size down. Wedding, here I come with my backless bra on. Is it all me or is it Maidenform? They'll never know. ;)

The bra sells for $25.00 on the Maidenform website and it is sold on several other sites for higher. Kohl's has it on sale at the moment so catch a sale if you can. I think $25.00 is very reasonable for such an innovation but don't mind saving money if I find a sale either!

Well, I love the idea of your surprise wedding. I think that sometimes other people just want to be in on the planning and stuff but it was your wedding after all. After that, I bet there was nothing but suspense when you invited people to your house for other things! Nobody was quite sure what to expect!

Well, back then, we had to decide between a big wedding or a down payment on a house. It made sense to do the house thing. My parents hated that we bought a house before we got married and we decided since we were going to do both anyway, why not get married in our new house? On Christmas Eve, no less. As a surprise. Haha. It sure was. My father thought I was pregnant (I certainly was not) and my mother mourned the fact that I didn't have a real wedding! No pleasing some people. :)

Boy, is that COOL! I wish you would write something about that sometime. I've never heard of a surprise wedding, that sounds so romantic! I bet everybody had a good time.

I watch that show now and then. Those women are crazy! I had a surprise wedding in my new house with just family and a few friends. They thought they were coming over for a Christmas party and we then announced we were getting married. No diva stuff for me. lol.

Weddings are really nice but it is always nice when they are OVER, too! Do you ever watch "Bridezillas"?

Ack. I am a much more casual type and really don't like getting all dressed up. And I hate weddings. I don't know anyone going to this one but my husband. I am already bored thinking about it. But it goes by quickly. (I HOPE!)

Maidenform is a pretty good brand and this sounds like a good item. I bet you'll look beautiful at the wedding!

I have an adhesive silicone bra thing and it stinks. It doesn't stick and drives me crazy. This bra will at least stay on me when I move and I don't have to worry that one of my cups will slide down my dress. lol.

In response to BubleFan1's comment from Jul 11, 2008 at 4:07PM:

No matter how skinny someone is, it seems that "bra fat" is always there. I just hate bulgy backs. I guess we women just have to deal with stuff guys never think about! lol.

LisaCarey wrote on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:03PM

I was thinking the same thing (that it HAS to be better than my adhesive cups and as a fuller size bust those are almost impossible to fit. With summer in Houston this sounds like a good alternative to some of my other bras with some of my warm weather clothing.

That's a good idea to wear them even under snug tops. I hate what Oprah calls "bra fat." Yuck!

Well, it's reallllly easy to take off. Bend forward and it slides off. It makes undressing in a hurry easy. OK, how did I get on THAT subject? LOL LOL.

In response to joyjoy's comment from Jul 11, 2008 at 9:17AM:

I suppose that is better than when my silicone self adhesive bra unstuck and fell to the ground. Ugh, that was bad. lol.

In response to BubleFan1's comment from Jul 11, 2008 at 10:06AM:

It really is. I don't really wear a lot of (or many at all) backless things but this does a good job when I wear tight tops that I don't want to have that strap digging into my back too. It leaves my back smooth. It's a good invention.

Fardreamer wrote on Jul 11, 2008 at 2:11PM

Tennis, basketball, or any other, um, extremely physical activities, eh? Very revealing. Great review, by the way.

BubleFan1 wrote on Jul 11, 2008 at 10:06AM

Great review! This is just amazing. I don't wear backless things but this breakthrough is huge!

joyjoy wrote on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:17AM

If you start adjusting your bra that might distract attention from the bride. And she's supposed to get attention, not you. :)

You said it would be uncomfortable and plus when do you ever wear backless stuff? Not that I do often...but I have to have one of everything you know.

In response to CyndiA's comment from Jul 10, 2008 at 5:02PM:

LOL, They do say it is fine for larger busts but you know how that goes. I'm shrinking since I started losing fat and gaining muscle! :(

LaurieM wrote on Jul 10, 2008 at 6:15PM

You were supposed to buy me one at the same time! Pfft. Well, I'm glad it works but I still don't understand how! Strange!

I fear I would have to use duct tape (-:
