Comments about Magic Chef Food Steamer & Rice Cooker (912):
I bought the Magic Chef Food Steamer/Rice Cooker Model 912 at a clearance price, having never owned a rice cooker. I wanted to try out a rice cooker but wasn't willing to spend too much on what I deemed an experiment.
The Model 912 is a basic rice cooker/steamer. It has a divided basket and a rice bowl so that you can cook rice, steam fresh or frozen vegetables, steam fish, hot dogs and poultry, warm breads and tortillas and reheat leftovers. The included manual is very clear and easy to read and gives instructions on preparing all the above items plus tips on cooking different types of rice. There is a manual timer with a bell and on-light, and an automatic shutoff.
I've cooked rice and steamed fresh vegetables in this cooker with satisfactory results. Rice proved to be a bit sticky when prepared according to the manual; after adjusting the amount of water a bit I solved that problem. Rice results were best when the rice was removed immediately rather than letting it stand for a few minutes before serving.
The baskets and rice bowl are hard plastic, probably lexan, and are very easy to clean. If you are looking for a low-cost basic rice cooker, this one fills the bill.
