I am a directionally-challenged individual, unable to determine left from right without some forethought and cannot say with any certainly whether I am facing north or south at any given moment (I blame my mother's insufficient nurturing for this). And maps are so utterly useless to me that I'm quite certain they are intentionally written in a language only understandable by males of our species. It is for this reason that I daily worship the person who invented the GPS, and the Magellan Maestro 4250 has been a purchase I've yet to regret. Using the 4250 is logical and effortless, compared to a few other GPS units that I've sat with for more than a few moments (hours?) trying to decipher how to navigate through menus. It also has some nice features to allow you to 1). find the nearest gas station, restaurant, etc. from a given point 2) avoid toll road, highways, etc. 3) bypass current path 4) mark points. It also allows you to input personal data such as AAA information for immediate contact, and include name and home info in case the unit is lost (and to that person in Florida who found my first unit when it fell out of my luggage, that name, address and phone number is in there FOR A REASON, LOSER!). I also like that, when you're really bored, you can switch from English to French (which sadly creates a new level of frustration due to struggling to determine whether "gauche" means left or right), and even if you are lost, it just sounds pretty. Of course, the supposed selling point for the "upgraded" 4250 is its "Voice Command and Control" feature. I was most excited about this feature, but lemme tell ya, it's really not that useful - nifty gadget, but utterly disappointing. Most of the time, it cannot recognize what you're saying - well, SCREAMING - at it. It also activates when you don't need it at all because of background noise (I hear "Say a Command!" in my sleep now). For this reason, I would recommend buying the lesser 4210 or 4220, which pretty much does the same thing, for less money, without the useless V&C command. Overall though, Magellan makes a quality product that, for the most part, easily and efficiently does what it's made to to.
