Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa —

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa is one of those rare sequels which is just as good as the first, and one that is enjoyable to both young and old, if the audience reaction from the theater this weekend is any type of a gauge.

The first Madagascar film was a success, relying on the star power of the character voices, some great writing, and a song that gets stuck in your head for days, I Like to Move It. With Escape 2 Africa, we get more of the same, with the same stars, Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith, David Schwimmer, and Sacha Baron Cohen. We even add Alec Baldwin to the mix this time in a role that resembles Scar from The Lion King. I Like to Move It is back, and we even have a little Boston and Barry Manilow thrown into the soundtrack along with some songs from will.i.am.

While that star power brings us into Madagascar 2, it's the humor in the writing that makes us enjoy the film even more. The humor here bounces back and forth between what would be understood by children and adults, with no apparent ill effect on either. Julien the lemur asking while riding in first class in the really broken down airplane that's about to crash for "nuts on a silver platter" had me giggling in the theater, as well as him telling the others to stop a more annoying lemur from entering the plane as he's carrying "scissors and hand cream." But the kids do understand all the humor they're supposed to get, which includes many of the sight gags.

In addition to the star power and humor, animated films always have to have some type of basic theme, some type of moral to be enjoyed at the end for both the young and old, and the Madagascar films are undeniably ones of friendship. New friends are great, but it's our old friends that are buried deep in our hearts. Each of the original four find their own reasons to be separated in Africa, whether it be looking for acceptance, family, or love, but in the end, they know they need to be together.

This leaves us by the end of Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa in awe of the star power, laughing our butts off, and feeling warm all over. It's exactly what an animated film should be these days.
