MAD MEN Review Summary

Set in a 1960s ad agency, "Mad Men is an Unsentimental Slice of the 1960s American Pie"as we are thrown back to a time when women were little more than window dressing and racism and corporate greed walked hand-in-hand. Mad Men"is smartly written, extremely well-acted, and authentic in its portrayal of the time period", which is why it will make one squirm a bit, as the shows writers pull no punches about life in the 1960s. All the taboos of the era are explored in a TV-14 type fashion and the show is critically acclaimed for its accurate portrayal of a bygone era. The central character is Don Draper (Jon Hamm) and his exploits are part of what gives Mad Menit's appeal. Risque. to some degree, and quirky, reviewer say, "David Lynch fans will like Mad Men, as will viewers of Dirt.". If you are over 45 and long to remember the changing social mores of America past, Mad Men should hold your attention.

For some reason, I was reluctant to sit down to watch Mad Men even though I'd heard it had rave reviews and my husband recommended it.  I really don't watch a lot of television, so the subject matter has to really grab my curiosity in order for me to commit to an hour.  The show's premise - a NYC advertising agency circa 1960 - didn't exactly capture my imagination.  I completely missed the first season, but decided to give the series a try for the premiere episode of the second.  I'm glad I did.

Mad Men begins its hour with a highly stylized opening sequence with Alfred Hitchcock-style graphics. ...

Mad Men is not a great "first date" show!
You'll both be squirming to get OUT of there:  him, cause the secretaries in this office are just meat;  her, coz she finds all that unmasked sexuality disturbingly stimulating.  But if you can appreciate the NOIR aspect of a darkly humorous drama, or if you just get off on seeing woman who are considered wildly sexy at Size 12......then Mad Men is for you.

Where / Who / What
The setting is a pressure boiler:  a respected NYC ad agency in the 1960s:  cross-your-heart bras and tight dresses;  cigarettes; dictation; booze in the office; ad campaigns...

My wife often quips that I'll watch anything, which is true but only if it entertains me.  Fail that test and I'll stop watching.  Many a new program has failed my test and I have moved on.  What is the test you might ask; it's not clear in my own mind, but I know when I don't like a program.

MAD MEN (MAD = Madison Avenue Advertising Men), a new hour long drama that aired this past Thursday on cables AMC is off to a good start.  The cast is pretty, especially the delectable red head Joan portrayed by the equally delectable, delightfully full-figured Christina Hendricks (Kevin Hill, Firefly...

I caught this series accidentally, while flipping through channels one afternoon at home. I found it disturbing, but fascinating, and I'll admit I've tuned in more than once to keep up with it - like a soap!

Most of us middle-aged folks realize this portrayal of the 60's is spot-on, as those years were not really exclusively about 'make love, not war', drugs and flower power and peace signs, which is the way this era in the USA is oft depicted.

MAD MEN is an accurate portrayal of the budding "dog-eat-dog" Narcissism of the corporate world of the 60's, sadly, but interestingly enough.

The members...

Mad Men is an entertaining show that gives a different perspective to the Pleasantville like stereotype often given to this era. It exposes a lot of social issues such as family dynamics, gender barriers, and sexual taboos. You are drawn into the characters, left wanting to know more about them. There is a thin line between the heroes and the villains and that is what makes it real.

This is an excellent TV show.  I just started watching it a few weeks ago, and saw the whole first season in three days!  The cast is all excellent, and the mystery of who is Don Draper really draws you into the first season.  The second season is looking good so far too, with Pete taking on a bigger role.

MadMen is the BEST!  It is so funny watching the little things they throw in.  Like leaving the trash after the picnic.  Don throws his can of pop like no big deal!  People actually use to just throw their trash anywhere and everywhere.  WATCH IT!

Mad Men is a very intelligent show that offers a fascinating glimpse of office life of 1960. In doing so it holds up a mirror to the racism and sexism of the present day. It is very well acted by a cast of unknowns. I especially like Elizabeth Moss as Peggy.

This is an in depth look at the decadence and misery of the rising upper-middle class of the early 1960's............suburbia in it's infancy.  Sadly, it is a very accurate portrayal of the time as I remember it.
