MAC Pigment —

Yes, you read that correctly. I have at LEAST 75 jars of MAC Pigments.

Many years ago, another company called STAGELIGHTS came out with an eye pigment and they used to sell it at JCPenney stores. I fell in love with them right away. Unfortunately, they disappeared shortly afterward and I spent many years searching in vain for these amazing eye pigments.

As an artist, I thrive on having iridescent unusual duochromatic pigments to add dimension and texture to my makeup.

When a fellow makeup artist friend of mine told me that I had to try MAC pigments, I did not even know what a MAC was.....we have no MAC anywhere near me, so I was resigned to try to guess what they were.

I did manage to snag a few off of Ebay before MAC put their pigments online for purchase.

Since then, I have been completely enamoured with MAC pigments.

WHAT ARE MAC PIGMENTS LIKE?

MAC pigments are in a little plastic clear jar with a black screw on top. There is a clear sealer inside which protects the 7.5g / .26 oz of product from spilling out of the jar cap.
They come in a black box from the store.

Inside comes the challenge. There are many types of MAC pigment. Some are available at www.maccosmetics.com and some are only sold through www.macpro.com

DIFFERENT FINISHES

Some of the finishes have a large particle surface which is shiny and reflective and gives a very opulent appearance to the pigment Many of the older pro colors have that finish. FROST (icy white), LILY WHITE(cream white), ROSE GOLD(rose w/ gold shimmer), and STEEL BLUE(warm dark turq with gold shimmer) are examples of this finish. It tends to be chunky and not as smooth in appearance.

Some of the finishes are more finely milled but they still have a shiny appearance- oftentimes, they are duochromatic. PINK PEARL(cool pink w/ violet duochrome), BLUE BROWN (red brown base w/aqua shimmer), GREEN BROWN (gold brown w/ kelly shimmer), are some examples of this finish.

Other finishes are more powdery and have less surface shine to the particles so they do not reflect as well at all. EMERALD (dark gray emerald green with pearl shimmer), KELLY (lighter kelly green with pearl shimmer), FAIRYLITE (icy peach pink with microglitter), and PROVENCE (buttercream base with gold shimmer) are examples of these.

The other remaining finish is matte. These are similar to crushed chalk- no shimmer at all and sometimes hard to blend. CLEAR SKY BLUE (powder sky blue), LANDSCAPE GREEN (leaf green) are two examples of this finish.

NOTE
CLEAR SKY BLUE is one of the matte colors that still cost full price ($19.50) but it comes with a LOT less product. Instead of the 7.5g you only get 2.5g which is a HUGE cut in products. Some other matte colors have the reduced amount of pigment in them.

WHAT CAN YOU USE PIGMENTS FOR?

There are SO many things that I have used pigments for.

-eyeshadow (MAC 239 brush is excellent for this purpose)
-lipcolor
-blush (MAC 187 brush is great for this)
-nailpolish
-in lotion to make shimmer lotion
-lip gloss
-paintings for watercolors
-pressed over liner on eyes (MAC 266 brush is good for pressing pigment over liner)

I have even used pigments to polish my shoes.

FINAL COMMENTS

MAC pigments are one of the most fabulous products I have ever been priveleged to buy. Although many of the newer formulations are not as nice of a quality and finish as the older ones were, it is worth the $19.50 price to get them.

The problem is that if MAC releases a pigment that is in the Limited Edition status, you might not find it again ever- unless you pay a LOT of money for it on Ebay.

Many people I know split containers of pigment to save money if they think they will not use it much.

You can get MAC pigments at www.maccosmetics.com and at www.macpro.com

Thanks for the great review. I love MAC products but hesitated about buying this because I didn't really know what to do with it. I think I'm gonna go on Ebay and try it out!
