MAC Eyeshadow.

How do I review something that has reviews so entirely opposite of my experiences?

I guess I will just dive in.

I have no MAC near me at all. For years I heard stories of the fantastic things available at the MAC counters and stores. I always wanted to know why people went so crazy over MAC products- especially their eyeshadows and pigments.

When I finally got to visit a MAC counter while on vacation for the first time, I almost went into a frenzy. The colors of eyeshadows alone was overwhelming. An artist could build a gigantic palette from MAC eyeshadows.

I bought at least 12 colors of eyeshadow. I was in makeup heaven.

Then, I actually wore the shadow.

I was out to dinner in a hotel and took great pains to apply my eyeshadow. It looked amazing. Then a half hour later, when I was in the bathroom I saw that I had no shadow on at all. I reapplied but in another half hour, same thing.

I kept trying to wear the MAC shadows with various bases and combinations, but after a few weeks, I began to have very irritated eyelids- they burned, swelled, and got so raw and sensitive that I became concerned.

I stopped using MAC eyeshadows and after a month, my eyes got better and gave me no more problems.

Then I introduced the eyeshadows again - this time only to one eye. Amazingly enough, that eye got very raw and irritated again. The other eye was fine.

I had to return all of the eyeshadows that I bought, and I was very upset about it.

I LOVED the color selection and quality of the shadows, but they just did not work for me.

WHAT ARE THESE SHADOWS LIKE?

MAC eyeshadows do not come with a brush. They are a simple round case and many people remove the metal pan that contains the shadows. They then put them in the professional palette that MAC sells for makeup professionals at their Pro stores.

The texture varies per color. Some are chalky, others are lush and intense.

There are different finishes- frosts, matte, matte2, luster, satin, veluxe, veluxe pearl, velvet.

I have seen many different MAC eyeshadows since that first experience and although the different finishes are distinct, there is a lot of crossing over from one to another.

For example, a veluxe pearl can be a metallic looking pearl in one color, and a flatter iridescent in another color.

There are some lovely iridescent duochromatic colors (they shift from one color to another such as a brown base and aqua shimmer, etc). Some of the matte colors are intense and pigmented.

FINAL COMMENTS

I have been able to use a handful of colors from the MAC eyeshadow collection, but I can only use them once in a great while to avoid the reaction and over a THICK base for protection.

I am not overly impressed with the quality of the MAC eyeshadows in terms of consistency, longevity, and allergic reactions.

I have spoken with quite a few people who have had similar reactions as I have and have had to return all of their MAC eyeshadows. They felt really outcast because they were told that they were the ONLY ones with such reactions.

I am here to say that you are NOT alone, there is a substantial group of us out here who do react to MAC eyeshadows.

Not every color is as irritating as the others, and if you are brave you can find a few that you can use, but you might not want the aggravation of the process!

Now with the new TOO FACED SHADOW INSURANCE as a base, I have been having better performance with the few MAC shadows that I can wear occasionally. They do last beautifully and go on with more intensity than they ever did.

If you are sensitive, I would recommend that you try a color on one eye for a while if you can. Then you can see if you are going to have problems with it. MAKE SURE TO USE AN EYESHADOW PRIMER OR BASE!!!

Or you can just dive right in like I did and suffer for a while.

COLORS THAT I HAVE

Parrot
Hepcat
Beauty Marked
Expensive Pink
Freshwater
Leisuretime
Aquadisiac
Lucky Green
Chrome
Beautiful Iris
Firespot
Cosmic

NOTE

If you are one of those unlucky people who have problems with MAC eyeshadows, you might want to try out their line of pigments. Although I have had lots of problems with some MAC eyeshadows, their pigments do not bother me at all if I use a good base.

The finish is more intense than the eyeshadows and the colors are more pure too in many cases. Like the eyeshadows, each color has different qualities and performance, but overall, they are superior to the eyeshadows in many ways.

That stinks! I love their shadows, but it sucks that you had that reaction to them!!! The colors are so pretty too! Hope you are able to find something that does not cause burning! That would scare me!
Great review by the way!
