Loverboy  —

Kyra Sedgwick is back.  After taking a considerable amount of time off from the entertainment biz to raise her children, Ms. Sedgwick is back with a vengeance, staring in a new weekly drama series, The Closer on TNT Television and a series of movies including Loverboy (2004) in which she once again stars alongside her husband Kevin Bacon.

Directed by Mr. Bacon (Friday The 13th, Hallow Man, The Woodsman), Loverboy is a disturbing yarn about an eccentric reclusive woman named Emily portrayed by the aforementioned Kyra Sedgwick (The Woodman, The Closer, Born on the Fourth of July), who wants nothing of the trapping of a traditional relationship.  But she really wants a child, and sets about getting one by having sex with a number of men.  Finally impregnated Emily gives birth to Paul portrayed by Dominic Scott Kay.  She moves into a new home and proceeds to raise Paul largely out of the eyes of the neighborhood; she never lets him play with the local children and even home schools the child.

But Paul whom Emily calls Loverboy begins to rebel, he wants his independence, wants to go to school like the rest of the children and wonders who and where his father is.  But Emily holds on tight and the predictable friction ensues, resulting in a very unpredictable ending.

I enjoyed Loverboy if only to see Ms Sedgwick stretch her considerable acting chops once more.
