I admit to having a well - addition to crime fiction books - including psychological thriller, suspense, and mystery and have several authors that I regularly visit for a good read.  Author Lisa Jackson is one of those.  I recently read Lost Souls, one of her most recent releases and found it no better, than her others and actually was a tiny bit disappointed.

Kristi Bentz (after surviving yet another attack by serial killers - this is number 2) decides to head back to college to finish her degree and fulfill her lifelong dream of being a true crime writer.  She should be a shoe in for this type of job, since her father is famous New Orleans Detective Rick Bentz, she at least has plenty of material - which he refuses to share.  She returns to the college she left outside of New Orleans, LA, All Saints to discover that for years girls have been disappearing from the college. Why?  Were they kidnapped or did they just drop out and leave their troubled lives behind?  It is not until she discovers that her off campus housing is also the former home of one of the missing girls that she is drawn into the secret cult world of vampire interest and practice.

Why are these girls missing?

Where they kidnapped?

Is there a secret vampire cult practicing on the campus?

Is the administration ignoring the problem? Or are they part of it?

Will she be the next victim after she discovers hidden clues in one of the disappeared girls apartment?

My Viewpoint:  Lost Souls by Lisa Jackson is worth the read if you enjoy this author or genre. However, some things are missing such as a reason why the bad guy is a bad guy as well as he seems sort of "wimpy." Read the book and you will see what I mean.  Also, the "psychic" ability of the main character -Kristi Bentz, is hit or miss and not exactly convincing. Not to give anything away, but she has been seeing the same vision about her dad for a whole other book and it hasn't happened yet. I wish the author would just take the plunge and make it work or not.  It did work in one instance in Lost Souls  but the hit or miss is annoying, frustrating and distracting.

None of these things takes away from the writing that Lisa Jackson does, there is definitely suspense and mystery in Lost Souls.  You don't figure everything out yourself though there are many peeks and it does come together nicely at the end. Buy it book club or borrow from a friend it's worth the read - just not at $14.96 for a hardback.  Maybe wait for the paperback.
