After a major roll over accident in 94 I had the unfortunate need for pain medications. I have been taking Loratab for almost 18 years now, I guess I am somewhat of an expert in how it works. Up until about 8 months ago I was taking them on a regular basis of about 2 or 3 a day in the 7.5mg strength. Which is 500mg of Acetaminophen and 7.5mg of Hydrocodone. The mixing of the acetaminophen with it allows the hydrocodone to work better than if it were by itself.

Hydrocodone

Hydrocodome is derived from codeine and thebain and are opiates which means they originally comes from opium. It is for moderate to severe pain and when mixed with the acetaminophen works pretty good. The big problem is people get addicted to it very easily as they want to keep the euphoric feeling they get from it. I have been scared of getting addicted but have gone weeks without taking one just to make sure I don't.

Eight months ago my Dr. lowered the number of Loratabs he gives me a month and I now wear a Fentanyl Patch In order to cut back on my Loratab usage. For the most part it works but I still find myself taking about 3-4 a week to curb the pain. You have to find the strongest dose that will help you but not so strong that it just puts you to sleep.

Right now I am fighting a flair up of the nerve damage caused in the accident and the Loratabs are a Savior for me. The pain is so intense at times it runs down my right arm and all the way to my fingers. If I didn't have Loratab to help with the pain I would literally go nuts.

I tore muscles in my back, ripped the nerves in both arms and blew out one of my knees in the accident. Six years later while trying to work I blew out my other knee because of the weakness from the nerve damage 6 years prior. Loratab and other drugs have been my only way to make it through the day. Even with 5 surgeries to correct the trauma I caused my body I am still never gonna be pain free again!

Although I have been taking them for 18 years I am respectful of what could happen and know a few people that were addicted to them. I pray I never get to the point of addiction and my Dr. and I discuss it monthly to make sure I am not. Between my Faith in God and my Dr.'s help I never will be addicted to them either!

Bottom Line

Taken responsibly Loratab can help you live with the pain. Once you get to the level of nerve damage and scar tissue from torn muscles that I have you learn very quick that Pain Free is just a dream you once had. Pain is a sign your still alive and I can honestly say I am still alive! Even with Fentanyl and Loratab I still hurt but that's the price one pays for tearing the body up like I did 18 years ago. If I ever wake up pain free I will probably be at the Pearly Gates looking at Saint Peter!

Remember one thing while taking any pain medication and Remember it GOOD! Pain Medications are not miracle cures, they do not make pain disappear! They are designed to help relieve pain and that is all. The only way to make pain disappear is by taking more than your Dr. prescribes and then you become Addicted! Don't be an Addict be responsible with pain medications!

When I can make a 1 month supply last 2 months I would say it is not addiction. Even now that I am on a higher dose I still use a 1 month supply in 2 months, as I only take them when the pain is too much to bear. The patch is because I need a new knee but they say I am too young for it now. Believe me if I could stop taking them and have pain relief I would drop them in a heartbeat. Years of physical therapy did nothing to help, so until they find a way to handle my pain without drugs then I am stuck. Thanks for your concern though ....;)

sorry for the pain you have had to endure. I sympathize with you.

on the other note...

if 18 years of loratab is not addiction, what is? Especially when it doesn't seem to work as well, why continue? it is when you can stop using without the drive for more and/or without withdrawal symptons that determines the absence of additon. The 'patch' suggests that there is an addiction. perhaps I am wrong in my analysis. 18 years is a long time.

It is a day and time I will never forget! 10/10/94 at 8:05am My best friend didn't find out till he saw the news and my wreck was the top story that day. He taped it for me but the tape got tore up in my vcr and I never had a chance to make a copy ;( The turn I wrecked in is infamous too! I am one of only 4 drivers out of 15 wrecks there to live and tell about it. To this day Indiana has never put any warning signs or lowered the speed limit there! That was almost 18 years ago too!

Not to make light of the subject, but OUCH! Double ouch. I'm so glad you survived what must have been a nearly fatal accident. I'm late on reading this one... sorry. But, I wanted to wish you well as you deal with your pain. I can't imagine how tough it must be.

Excellent review. I had no idea the accident was that major. I am so sorry to hear you went (and continue to) go through so much.

I hear ya, they cut me back because I have been on it so long. But it works better than this other stuff they got me on now. They only allow me 15 a month as opposed to the 60 I used to get a month ;(

Buggheart wrote on Jan 31, 2008 at 1:42PM

I had no idea codeine came from opium. I guess that explains why I like it so much and you have to have an act of Congress to get some. And I'm glad you have something that helps get you thru the most painful times.
