To the Point

After learning about Skypes my husband got us a good webcam for home. He sent me the QuickCam Messenger (Chat)** from Logitech, which he told me was not expensive but does the trick. I am able to see him and my Hanna (a 4-year old Pomeranian). It's worked out wonderfully while I've been in Florida taking care of my mom.

A Closer View

I'm not a techie so I'll be describing this as I used it and leave some specifications at the bottom.

When I got it and took it out of the package I was nervous that I wouldn't be able to set it up but it couldn't have been simpler. It came with software which walked me through very simple steps. It might have taken me 10 minutes but probably less.

Great so I have it installed; then I had to see if and how it worked. My husband called me through Skypes and was able to see and hear me. I just put the cable into one of my ports just as I would do for my camera or flash drive. I already had seen him and Hanna through Skypes with his camera but until I had the QuickCam Messenger he couldn't see me.

It was great. I was able to snap a picture of him and Hanna. It's so easy to use. He told me the quality of the picture was ok. It wasn't excellent nor was the sound. My rating will be based on the bang for the buck. You'll find it on Amazon for $28.00 and there was a $10 rebate but note: the CODE is on the inside box which I threw away before I knew my husband wanted it!

Logitech calls this the QuickCam Chat but the pamphlet that it came with calls it the Messenger. www.logitech.com

I also discovered during this review that I was doing something wrong. I couldn't get the eyeball, which is the camera, into the tab for it to stand or hang on my computer. When I used it I held it on my computer. As I was writing this review I started typing an e-mail to Logitech but I had a feeling that this couldn't be broken so I pushed the eyeball very hard onto the tab. I did this a couple of times afraid I was going to break it. Well it snapped into place! So now I can arrange the eyeball a little better! It's not perfect but it will do.

I would only recommend this one for short chats or for the particular reason I have it - for long distance relationships! For the money it's a good webcam - of course I should disclose it's only the second one I've seen and the first one I've used myself.

The Logitech QuickCam has a 2-year limited warranty.

The eyeball/camera is about the size of a golf ball and the base it sits on is about 2 inches so this unit is small.

Jo's Viewpoint

I like it!

great fun for the occasional chats, but doesn't hold up in the long run, i agree.

I have the same one, and it's perfect fo rmy limited needs. My sister and I sometimes use them when catting to each other, just so I can get a glimpse of her kids, who seem to grow by leaps and bounds daily. I only see them in person a few times a year, so it's a good way to "see" them, and it's been a good way for her baby to get to know me during his formative years.

I really wish I had a grandchild - these cameras are really popular with us babyboomers who don't live close to their children (well especially our kids' kids). But for the money they're just plain fun. Jo
