Bottom-Line: For a general purpose optical pointing device, the Logitech MX Revolution Cordless Mouse can't be beat.

I bought the MX Revolution Laser Cordless Mouse because frankly I was tired of my old mouse and I wanted to reduce the number of cords underneath my desk.  And I wanted a cordless without the large transceiver and Logitech delivered again with the MX Revolution, with a unit the size of a small stick of gum and plugs into any available USB port.

The Mouse

At first glance the MX Revolution is a little unusual; it is not shaped like any other mouse I have used in the past including the MX Laser. The mouse fits nicely in the hand and its size makes it easy to use; it's not too big and not too small.  What is unique is the padded thumb rest that juts out from the black and gray mouse's left side; it's not only stylish but functional.

In all other respects the MX Revolution is a conventional two button mouse with a few extras thrown in for good measure.  The clearest change for the mouse is the metallic scroll wheel that sits in the middle front of the mouse.  The wheel as two mode of operation: step and free-spinning, each of which allow you to navigate a document of web page more easily.  Which mode the scroll wheel adopts depends on where you are. For instance in a long web page, the scroll wheel will spin freely paging up and or down the web page with ease.  After only a few minutes of using this new feature I was hooked!

The scroll wheel also allows you to scroll left or scroll right by tilting in one direction or another.  Right after the scroll wheel is a search button that allows you to search your favorite search tool for highlighted words and phrases.   If a word is not highlighted, depressing the button will open the search tool.

Along the left hand side of the MX Revolution are handy thumb-button controls that allow you to page forward and backward through web pages and documents.  Directly after these buttons is an illuminated low level battery indicator that relays the current charge level of the included Li-Ion rechargeable batteries.

Underneath the MX Revolution there is housing for the laser unit and a sliding On/Off switch.  Like all Logitech laser pointing devices, the MX Revolution automatically shuts itself off during periods of inactivity; sweet. The MX Revolution ships with a RF base station that connects to the computer's USB port.

Performance and Use

Logitech makes claim that the new MX Laser Engine perched inside the MX Revolution is many, many times more sensitive than a standard (red) LED.  But because the laser tracks movement more accurately than a standard LED, over virtually any surface (matt or glossy, black or white), the MX Revolution takes more precise readings of the surface.  The result: more exact cursor movement onscreen, which Logitech claims makes for better gaming, and graphics work.

I can testify to the MX Revolution smooth movement over the screen; I have had the MX Revolution for almost a month and in that time the cursor has never jumped, jittered, skipped, or paused.  I can even manage to manipulate the specialty buttons and use the mouse at the same time, though I will admit that this took some getting used to.

My Viewpoint

For a general purpose optical pointing device, the Logitech MX Revolution Laser Cordless Mouse is hard to beat.  Light weight and attractive the MX Revolution is comfortable, and easy to maneuver, and far more functional than any other mouse I have used.  The MX Revolution laser guided pointing device is reliable workhorse that keeps getting better with age.

Is this mouse still going strong? BestBuy has it on sale for 49.99. Thinking about getting it.

Ouch on the price, but thank goodness for that rebate. I'm going to consider this since my wired mouse is actually gouging a notch in my desk.

I bought mine at Amazon.com for 69.99, but there is a $30.00 mail-in rebate promotion going on, so...

Good review, I might have to try it. After two years, my Logitech MX Laser is getting weird and I need a new one!

Yep, when it comes to input devices, Logitech is a tough act to beat.
