The trouble with Petros

I don't live in the North Georgia area, but my best online friend does, and she just had a disturbing experience while dining at Petros in Cedartown.

The problem wasn't with the food; my friend and her family enjoyed the meal well enough.  No, the trouble with Petros is more with the manager and staff, who willfully ignored my friend's husband's explicit instructions to charge only 15% gratuity when paying with a debit card.  Instead, the manager added an extra 5% to the tip, which caused my friends a problem with a temporary overdraft from their bank account.  (This has been solved, so it worked out for my friends.)

Understand. My friends just relocated to the Atlanta area because they both found better jobs than where they were living.  But when one is starting out in a new place and trying to save, even a temporary overdraft can cause problems.

This is a bad business practice and people should be cautious when using credit/debit cards at Petros.

Was it a math mistake, or the manager was just like "I'm putting on 20% no matter what." When I have put a tip on a debit card purchase, I usually tell them the actual dollar amount to add to the total.

I can't tell if it was willful or not. You can't just take money from people like that. Especially when the percentage of tip is usually directly related to the level of service you received.

According to my friend, her husband clearly said 15% tip because he - who worked in a WaMu bank before they moved to Georgia - did the math first and knew how much they could afford to tip.   When my friend told other Atlanta-area friends about this, they said, "Oh, same thing happened to me,, too!"

Luckily, they were able to dispute it with their bank and got the overdraft corrected.

Petro...or the name of any truck stop - makes me cringe!  I drove a truck for about 17 years.  I've driven over-the-road, regionally & locally.  Why would anyone want to eat at these places?  Over-priced, no service & poor quality food.  PUKE!  I always looked for a "Mom & Pop" joint that had truck parking close by.  Just follow them union freight haulers...Yellow, Roadway, etc.  If you can find where they chow down...you've found a good spot.

They probably scam lots of people who don't notice. I wonder who gets the windfalls. What a pain to have to dispute 5% with the bank. It only takes a few bucks missing to rack up a ton of overdraft charges. I am glad it was settled!
