Llama Llama Misses Mama, by Anna Dewdney, is a 32-page children's book that details Little Llama's first day of school without his mama.

The Story:

Llama Llama starts school today, and he is missing his mama as soon as she leaves. Little Llama does not know the teacher or the other animals in class and seems a bit overwhelmed. The teacher has lots of fun activities planned, like playing train, reading a book, and eating lunch, but Llama just misses Mama and begins to cry.

The teacher reminds Little Llama that Mama will come back and the other students encourage Llama Llama to play with them. Finally, Llama Llama decides to join in the fun and then Mama Llama does come back!

My Viewpoint:

My 5-year-old particularly likes Llama Llama Misses Mama, probably since she will be starting kindergarten in the Fall. I think this is a cute story, but I am afraid that if a child is missing her parent that this book might actually remind her that Mama is not there and may actually make her miss her parent even more. If a parent is reading this book at home, I think it would be great.

Llama Llama Misses Mama does incorporate rhyming throughout the book and allows the Little Llama to display his feelings without feeling like an oddball. Many children find it difficult to get through that first day of school. Probably just as many Mama Llamas do too.
