I still can't find the words to describe my recent trip to NYC to see Grace Jones live for the very first time. The night resulted in sheer magic for me having followed this woman for so long. Grant it she never became a huge name but for me it was a bit more personal. For me Grace came at a time when I became to step outside of what I grew up on. I started to make my own musical way as opposed to be told what I should be listening to. Were as allot of my peers were turned off by Grace Jones I was captivated with the way art/image/and music flowed through her with sheer perfection. The images paired with a beautiful backdrop of top studio personal she became walking vocal work of art.
When Living Me Lifehit back in the early 80's even the most sceptic of folk could not resist it's groove. I had already been hooked by the time it hit but this one sent me over the edge. Though very short this cd can be summed up in two songs, Nipple To The Bottle and My Jamaican Guy. Those two tracks broke every speaker back in the day and had everyone (within my reach) rocking to it's beat. Even though the album did not do well these two songs, which were not commercial hits, became cult classics to her fans and non-believer's. Even having been weeks after the experience I still am on a high having gotten to hear my favorites live (including the two named above). After returning home I had to give my ipod a boost and pull out the songs that truly define a moment in time for me......just Living My Life!
