Little Miss Sunshine —
This film joins a family just as everyone is reaching breaking point and meltdown seems inevitable.Dad is the worlds worst motivational speaker desperately trying to secure a deal, mum is trying to keep things together, her brother has just failed a suicide attempt, grandpa is a coke sniffing porn addict, the son is a Nietzche reading goth who refuses to speak until the airfoce academy takes him and the little daughter is being taught by grandpa to be a beauty queen.
When the daughter gets the offer to appear in a beauty pagaent,(the little miss sunshine contest of the title), they all up and away to cross the country in a knackered VW camper.
It would spoil it to say any of the events that befall them on their trip. However what really matters is the fantastic level of acting by all involved, not least the little girl who manages a totally natural feel throughout.
The arguments feel real as does the affection and the directors always steer the plot away from the usual, not letting any scene linger too long and yet building up an understanding of the characters very quickly so that you care.
There is a lot of very gentle humour throughout the film and there are so many twists and turns it repays repeated viewing with a lot of things you miss the first time around.
This is a very impressive and enjoyable movie that doesn't waste a single second of it's lean 98 minutes running time.
The picture is excellent, colours are very vibrant and clear and the sound mix too is spot on. There are a few extras, including a commentary, but its the film that counts here.
This is a really pleasant surprise and is well worth your time.
