The film takes on several issues in a very honest, direct way thanks to a good script by Scott Frank, and solid direction by Jodi Foster. Since some of the subject matter relates to Jodi's own childhood, she has a real feel for the material and it shows.
The acting is particularly strong from all the supporting characters and the film avoids being too sentimental or cute.
