  Little Heathens:  Hard Times and High Spirits on an Iowa Farm During the Great Depression is Mildred Armstrong Kalish's delightful memoir of growing up in rural Iowa during the 1930's.  Mildred grew up with her mother, her two brothers (John and Jack) and her sister (Avis).  Her father was banished from the family while Millie was fairly young (something whispered about bankruptcy).  Her grandparents had been fairly successful and owned four farms.  When they retired, they bought a house in the town of Garrison.  It was into this environment Millie now… read full review »
