After much research of automatice litter boxes, I decided on the Litter Robot. Glad I did. I have a 16 year old, very finicky cat and she is doing just fine. She didn't take to it right away, but with some work after a week or so, she started using it. I had serious doubts about her using it, but I thought - what the heck - I'm only out the return shipping if she won't use it, so we decided to give it a try. And I'm glad I did. Here is what we did. When we first put it together, she snooped all around it - of course - something new - and then she just went away. Then we plugged it in and let it do it's thing - well - she walked back into the room before the cycle finished and that freaked her out - big mistake. We were then thinking that she'll never come near it again. So, we left it unplugged and put her old box right in front of this one on the floor for a few days - she used the old box as usual. Then we elevated the old box to the same height of the bottom of the entrance hole of the LItter Robot - so when she was in her old box, she could see into the new box. The "shelf/step" of the litter robot was still separating the two. After a couple of days we moved her old box on top of the step/shelf so that it was right up against the entry hole of the LR. Left it like that for a few days. All along this time, we were still cleaning out the old litter box. After a few days of this, we started to let the old box get dirty. It got pretty nasty - to the point that she was just peeing in it and not even trying to cover it up. We also got up everything that she might pee on - laundry, covered up carpet, etc. (we don't have much carpet, so that wasn't a problem.). We really didn't leave her any options on where else to go to the bathroom. After the old box got really dirty, we took the old box away and she started using the LR - YAY!!!!! But......she wasn't going in far enough because some of the pee was getting on the outside of the box. I emailed the LR people and here is their suggestion. Tape a quarter to the end of a string. Tape the string to the top of the entry hole and let it hang down across the opening. When she goes in, the quarter will tickle her rear end and she will scoot up further. Well, it worked! She hasn't peed outside the box any more. And, I've taken the quarter off and it still works. Now....you need to understand that I am plugging the box in manually once in the morning and once at night to let it run. I am not letting it run automatically yet. I'm going to go about another week before I let it run automatically and hope that it won't freak her out. But, hey, even if I have to plug it in 2 times a day, I'm still not scooping poop and it's worth it. I've emptied the bag only once a week. I love it and highly recommend it.
