"Zinnia and Dot" is a children's book that details how two enemy hens end up sharing the mother role for a baby chick.
Zinnia and Dot spent so much time arguing early in the book that a weasel ate all their eggs except one. After much arguing, the two hens decide they will both sit on the egg, but they still refuse to become friends despite the advice of the mourning doves.
Each thinks that the egg is hers.
After Zinnia accidentally swatted Dot instead of the fly that was buzzing around their heads, a brawl began and the weasel sees his chance.
Both hens then attacked the weasel and sent him running and the egg began to hatch. Instead of fighting over the baby chick, Zinnia and Dot each think the chick resembles the other hen. Both love the chick and agree that he's the most perfect chick they have ever seen.
The story mentions that Zinnia and Dot did not always get along but did learn to be friends. The chick is blessed by two mother hens that adore him.
At our house:
My six-year-old would prompt me on the next word if I got distracted while reading aloud, so the reading level is perfect for an early reader. Both my six-year-old and four-year-old stayed focused on the book from beginning to the end.
My daughters giggled and giggled to see those two hens sitting on the same egg. I even found myself chuckling as the fly began to buzz around their heads!
We checked this book out at the library and the six-year-old has requested that I read it every day.
I'd say "Zinnia and Dot" is a definite 5-star children's book at our house!
