Everybody knows that this Redneck likes to experiment with different foods and ways to enhance flavors of those foods. Well for many years I have used Lipton Soup Mix to not only make soup but it also makes a fantastic dip for chips of all kinds. I have also used it to change the way some foods taste to get my picky eaters to eat some things or to just add a WOW Factor to old favorites.

Lipton Beefy Onion Soup Mix

For years I used the original Lipton Onion Soup Mix, that is until they started making other flavors. This Beefy Onion has become my favorite for many reasons, it just has a better WOW Factor and really adds a sensational taste to many of my signature dishes. Now not many people like Liver and Onions but it's just because they haven't tasted mine! My Mom taught me the right way to fix it and it comes out tender instead of rubbery. The trick is you need to fry it first on both sides and then the magic begins.(If you don't like liver then cubed steak works just as good) Frying it until it's done is a big reason it gets rubbery on you, slow cooking is how you keep it tender!

Once you have dredged it in flour and have it fried (about 2 minutes on each side, you only want it medium rare right now) take it out of the pan and set it aside. Now add your onions and a half stick of butter to the same frying pan get them nice and browned. Then grab your crock pot and put 1 can of mushroom soup in the with 3/4 of a can of milk(you can adjust up or down to suit your tastes), then add 1 packet of Lipton Beefy Onion and stir it up until it's mixed. Now add your liver and onions to it and cover it up. Put your crock pot on medium( let it cook about 3-4 hours). When done you should have a nice gravy from the soup that you can thin out or thicken as you like. ( my crock pot cooks it all the way through on medium just fine, I have a Rival with low, medium and high)

The flavor from the mushroom soup and the Beefy Onion will add a real nice flavor to the liver and onions, plus the liver is going to be nice and tender as well. Mine always comes out so that you can cut it with your fork with very little effort. Plus doing it this way my kids have always loved it. Serve it with mashed potatoes and green beans and you have a feast that tastes pretty darn good!

I also use Lipton Beefy Onion for meatloaf, pot roast, chili, hamburgers and of course to make a great chip dip. Try making fried potatoes and sprinkle some Beefy Onion Soup Mix in with them, not the whole packet but use it as a seasoning instead of salt and pepper. I have also made gravy with it by melting butter in a frying pan adding flour to make a rue and then added milk to make gravy. Then add how ever much of the Beefy Onion to your taste. I do this sometimes for lunch when I want a bowl of mashed potatoes or a jazzed up baked potato.

Bottom Line

This stuff can really add tons of flavor to most any dish, you are only limited by your imagination. Maybe that's why I got elected to do 90% of the cooking at my house, my wife says I am good and the kids seem to agree. Their friends seem to make it over at supper time a lot too!....lol I am not afraid to experiment in the kitchen it's not rocket science and you won't blow anything up either. Cooking to me is fun and seeing it all gone and happy faces feels pretty good too!

Thanks for all the ideas on using the Lipton Beefy Onion. Just like you I have also used it for dip, and now I can't wait to surprise my husband with it in the meatloaf. I'm sure that will be great! He loves meatloaf, and I love creativity like this. Thanks a million for all the great ideas.

Very true there are so many ways to fix food that it can be overwhelming at times. If it is cooked too fast it gets dry and even I don't like it then. ;)

I'm about the only one here too (So I do the single portions)Or" invite the in-laws as they love it too", my hubby will sometimes eat it,I don't expect my kids to try it till there ready, I hated it growing up till I cooked my own way from working as a prep chef in a resterant,I like the flavor. I always tell my children you can't say you 100% hate a food, but you can agree that you hate it 100% how it was pre-pared,because 1 food can be pre-pared in 100 different ways you may like it better another way.

Yeah I am about the only one here that eats it since my son graduated and my youngest decided to go vegetarian. I do still make it but just for me, I like it so they can eat whatever that night. Just had to get used to fixing a single portion...lol ;)

I got part of the yard mowed, but it started raining buckets. Isn't it dark there anyway, or do you have lights on your lawnmower? John Deere has lights right?

No I haven't tried that one...I like Lawry's as well and yes you need lots of black pepper. Naaaa my daughters appreciated me when I moved 800 miles away...lol I keep telling them to come visit and I will cook them a good meal ;)

It's too hot in the kitchen other than winter. Nice then. I'll stick with electric unless I'm outside. Then it's charcoal or wood.

In response to kid-kansas's comment from Apr 26, 2008 at 11:39AM:

Say, Ron, did you ever try that "Golden" Lipton Onion Soup Mix? It is the chicken variety (tastes terrible if you accidentally make a dip out of it like I did once) and I bet that would be good in fried chicken batter. I bet your fried chicken is great just the way it is. My dad used to use Lawry's salt instead of regular salt and tons of black pepper. Now I appreciate his hard work on some summer Sundays filling up a big brown paper bag with I don't know how many fried chickens and driving me and some of my friends up to Lake Geneva for a picnic. That's the secret to being appreciated, Ron -- be dead for 20 years and THEN they appreciate you! Haha!

Yeah with high cholesterol it would not be good for ya, dang it! My Grandma cooked on a coal stove, I wouldn't mind it, couldn't be much different from using my wood burning grill but with my luck a strong wind would make me look like a coal miner....lol ;)

You're making me hungry. I love liver and onions, but I'm not supposed to have it due to high cholesterol. My Great Grandma made it on a coal stove - yum. I don't think I want to cook on a coal stove though.
