Lipitor...me? For over twenty years I dealt with the dreaded blood work from my annual exam. I always knew that my cholesterol would be high- it runs in the family. So I just told myself, eat well for a couple of days before the appointment and it won't be as bad as it could be. Then when the doctor asks, tell him that I will work on my diet. So for those twenty years I continued on this pattern, often changing doctors every few years, probably because I knew deep down that they couldn't "catch up" with the cholesterol problem that way. Well, needless to say nothing worked- it was better some years than others, but still way to high. Then I hit 50. Ouch. And I realized how many decades I had spent fooling myself. So when I went to that dreaded blood-work review appointment I held my head high and stated "I have tried all the special diets for years and nothing has worked. I think it's time to try something else". Wow- was that really me speaking? But yes it was, and low and behold there were several options, and my doctor was more than willing to start at the lowest dose and move up if need be. He talked about the pros and cons of each drug, and we decided together on his recommendation of Lipitor for several reasons. 1) it has been on the market the longest and has the most studies 2) many of those studies are showing benefits in other areas of heart care, such as reduction of inflammation 3) the side affects are rare and minimal, but also even less with the low dose. 4) he had seen results in as little as 8 weeks.
So after my decades of postponing help, I began Lipitor. And you know what- IT WORKS! After only 7 weeks on a very low 20mg dose, and absolutely no change in diet or exercise, my decades-long high cholesterol had lowered itself to a completely acceptable range! I still have a bit of trouble with my HDL and need to raise it, but I have no doubt that the 6 month check will show even greater improvement.
What are you waiting for? Talk to your doctor- this med really works!!!
