Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Router Review Summary

Linksys produces a bewildering array of products for a large cross-section of customers from home users to small/medium sized businesses. One of these is the WRT54Gs Wireless Router/Switch with SpeedBooster technology. While most of reviewers lauded the 3-n-1 (Router/Wireless Access Point/4-port Switch) black and blue Linksys unit with one stating: “I personally love this router!” not all are enamored of it. One review stated that the unit worked fine until he had to move the computer at which point it lost its connection to the router. Like most Linksys networking gear, the WRT54Gs offers a robust feature set, and are easy set-up and configure. In addition to SpeedBooster technology, which is supposed to increase the wireless throughput, the unit utilizes WPA/WPA2 wireless security protocols. Although a little more expensive than comparable units, Linksys is known for its dependability and solid performance. After struggling for years with a D-Link and having intermittent breach issues because of the firewall I switched first to an earlier model Linksys but recently upgraded when I upgraded my PC.  The setup for this one was nearly plug it in and turn the power on.  — I did have… read full review »

While this wireless router is inexpensive and does the job, but having to reset it frequently (like every 2 or 3 days) makes it less than optimimal.  I have used Linksys routers on DSL and Cable, and find the problem on both.  Makes me think it is the router, as I have not had the… read full review »

I paid full price for this because it was rated best on the market in value & price.  First installation, with the computer on the other side of the room from the router was a snap and worked fantastic.  When I moved the computer to the opposite corner of a 1,100 sq ft house, it couldn't find the router.  I had to pay a computer geek to come to my house in the country and 'jiggle' with it to get it to work.  Worth the trouble/money as he did some other stuff including firewall and pass word protect things.  But, when I moved to a totally new location, with a totally… read full review »

I bought this router to go with my Clearwire dsl service. — I was tired of taking my Clearwire modem with me when I wanted to move to the other end of the house. True I could plug it in anywhere but I use a cane so I had to make two trips to carry my laptop and the modem and it's wires. (or pack it all into a case and then unpack again) — This wireless router has freed me from this problem. I get a great connection from anywhere on my property. Even out in the garage. I think my computer is even faster now than when I was plugged directly into the modem. — I was… read full review »

My old Linksys router just quit with no warning and no symptoms. So I bought another brand which was a bit cheaper.  It was a well known name but I found it very difficult to set up and get to work.  Once I did get it set up it would knock me offline every few minutes.  So I decided to go back to the quality of the Linksys product. I returned the inferior product and bought the Linksys WRT54Gs router.  I took it home, loaded the software and followed the instriuctions.  Within about 10 minutes my home network was up and runnning again. The only "con" I can think of… read full review »

Although I work from home and use computers all day every day, I only know how to USE them.  I don't know how to install or set up ANYTHING.  Technologically challenged, that's me.  Despite this, I was having no problem at all setting up this router . . . until my old operating system wouldn't work with it.  So I called the Linksys tech support, and words can't express how fantastic the tech guy was.  He talked me through a manual configuration and it was up and running in no time.  If I can get this thing hooked up (with a little help), ANYONE… read full review »

The WRT54GS Wireless Router is fairly easy to setup, even for a "newbie", however, the security settings can be a little daunting at first. If you simply follow the instructions, use Linksys' recommendations relating to security settings, etc...you should be up and running with very little effort. — — DHCP setup is straight-forward for PCs and assigned IPs are no problem either. I have a mix of Unix and PCs running on my internal network and have not encountered any issues to date.If you have problems with signal strength, try reorienting/relocating the unit, even a little, as… read full review »

I bought two of these one for me and one for a Christmas present.  I set mine up before giving the other one as a gift figuring I would get stuck setting that one up as well.  Once I did mine, they are on their own, it was so easy to figure out, even someone with less network skills than me and read and follow the step by step instructions. — Note - the links with the prices that they give for this router are showing the prices for the same router WITHOUT the Speed Booster!  I got mine at Best Buy where they had the regular and the Speed Booster ones all… read full review »

I highly recommend this product for anyone who would like to set up a network, even one for just your own house! I personally use this product at home and in the office. It has great performance. I actually have it resting on it's side behind a laserjet printer and it continues to give me great reception. — I have never had an issue with bad connections or reception with this device. I have been able to use a laptop over fifty feet away from the device and still get a good wireless connection. — It also has a good security system with a WEP key that is easy to install and secure… read full review »

I have 3 computers in my house all hooked to this router.  I love that everyone can be online at the same time and not have to worry about running all the cables throughout the house.  With two kids in high school and two in elementary school, computers are a necessity.  When I first started shopping around for routers, I looked at some more expensive ones thinking, the more you pay for it, the higher quality it would be.  This router was in the middle of the price range and was well within my budget of what I was willing to spend.  Plus, the sales associate that I… read full review »

Overall, once this wireless router is installed there are no issues. If you have Windows XP service pack 2, you have to go to the Linksys website and download compatibility software. Once that is done, the directions are easy to follow. They have diagrams for you to follow as to where everything needs to be plugged in. — — The cost of this router is relatively inexpensive and I haven't had any issues with it once I got it fully installed. I am in no way a computer expert. My feeling is that if you have any basic computer knowledge it shouldn't be too hard to install. I know I… read full review »

This router was recommended to me by a friend who is a computer geek.  It was on sale at several dealers, but I went on ebay and was able to win it for $25 less than it was on any dealers' site.  It was easy for me to setup.  It works well with my laptop and that of my daughter anywhere within the house. it does not take up a lot of room.  I did have to contact customer service after a storm and found the service to be courteous and knowledgeable.  I was able to reset the router with a little help.  It was nice knowing that such good service was available. … read full review »

I have used this wireless router for over a year now and have nothing but good things to say about it.  The main router is attached to my computer with 2 others attached to my childrens computers.  We can all use the internet at the same time and have not noticed any type of change in the speed of downloads or moving between websites.  This is definitely a product I would recommend, even though it might cost more than some others, it is well worth the money.  It is very easy to install, so if you are technologically new at installing hardware, you shouldn't have any… read full review »

I recently purchased the linksys router from Best Buy. After spending 2-3 hours trying to install and use I called tech support. The first thing the person asks is when did we purchase, I said today he tells me that according to the serial number this was purchased 6 weeks earlier. After spend 2-3 more hours with the help of tech support we were still unable to get it to work. I took the router back to Best Buy and the person  in custom service says I guess we need to destoy this, it has been returned 3 times now. Needless to say I will not be shopping at Best Buy again anytime… read full review »
