We visited the Lincoln Park zoo on a hot afternoon in August 2008. I had this on my list as a last day type of thing because you have to drive from it or otherwise take transportation to it since it is about 15-20 minutes from downtown Chicago.
The Zoo is free but pricey. The Zoo itself is free and they love to use that as their selling point, however parking will cost you. The buses may be cheaper, but we decided it was worth driving there so we could just head home afterward. Food will also cost you A LOT. We got 2 slices of pizza and 2 slushies for $17! That is a lot if you ask me. ...
review »For those visiting Chicago (or those that live in Chicago), the Lincoln Park Zoo offers a great cultural experience for FREE!
There are a ton of positives. There are far too many positives to list. Among them-- the zoo is free. Did I mention free? It is also located right on the lake. It has an amazing collection of primates (recently redone in the last few years) as well as all the usuals- penguins, wolves, eagles, snakes, giraffes, tigers, lions, bears (oh my!) etc. The museum also has a beautiful but separate botanical building that houses a gorgeous collection of flowers and plants.

review »The zoo is a great treat when visiting the city. It's free and on the bus route so it is easy to get to from almost any location in the city or north side of Chicago.
There is a farm, which is fun. I love to see the peguins. Also the tigers are just great.
In the fall and winter months, the zoo rents out a lot of the animals and the exhibits are left empty. So you may have walked to the back of the zoo to find out the giraffes are not there.
It's a good idea to print an online map before you arrive as they are hard to find once you arrive at the zoo. The gift shop is rather expensive, but most...
review »lincoln park zoo is the best for little kids!! we go there every summer, it's very nice, especially because we have small children and they get tired fast !! we use public transit,it's a lot cheaper, and we carry food from home, make a picnic there, and we get all the fun one could get on a nice summer day !!!
I love Lincoln Park Zoo. It's a perfect place to go when the weather is nice! It's not going to be the best zoo you've ever been too but it is definitely worth the trip. My husband and I spent our first date there walking around the zoo, sipping hot chocolate, during their annual Zoo Lights. It was very romantic! Parking on the weekend can be a bit hairy - but the parking lot rate is reasonable considering the zoo is free. So pack a picnic and bring the kids and have a great time! Definitely take a ride on the merry-go-round too! And walk through the gardens and bask in the sun - it's a great...
