Several years ago I was suffering from some lower and middle back pain issues. The combination of stress and working at a desk all day typing was producing very tight muscles in my back. I had a very occasions where I was laid up for a few days barely able to walk.
I sought the advice of many people. One of the first things people told me was to get my workstation set up so that it was more ergonomically sound. I installed a key board tray, bought an Aeron Chair for the office. I even stopped keeping my wallet in my back pocket because I was told that it was getting me off centered. All of these things helped. Ultimately however, I attribute some of my "cure" to Pilates.
All that said, I also "invested" in an incredibly comfortable chair for my home office. I am sitting in it right now and of all the chairs I have used over the years, it is the most comfortable (and the most expensive!). It is called the Lifeform® Management Grand Chair and I bought it at a Relax the Back store near my house. It has a very deep seat which I really like, and the arm rests adjust perfectly to where I need them. The material is a very comfortable and durable black suede. The cushion itself is billed to be a memory foam. Unlike some other mesh, cloth, leather and cushion chairs I have used, I do like the memory foam the best.
As a point of comparison, I have the Herman Miller Aeron chair at the office. I also have the Steelcase Leap chair (which also retails for $850+). While I like them both very much, I prefer the Lifeform to all three. (I bought the Steelcase Leap chairs for our office for much much less from a local used office furniture dealer)
When we were outfitting our previous office we were buying 200+ chairs and given how important I think comfortable seating is for productivity we ultimately purchased the Knoll Life Chair. We got a pretty good deal because we bought them in volume. http://www.knoll.com/products/product.jsp?prod_id=188&flag=cat&cat_id=23 Yet, still, prefer the Lifeform Management Grand Chair to the Knoll Life chair. As you will see from this link, this chair also retails for $1,000+ http://www.allmodern.com/asp/show_detail.asp?sku=KLL1033&settab=1&refid=G8480.knoll+life+chair&gclid=CPudwc78go4CFQWTIgodXlxiQw
Bottom line: I know it is a crazy amount of money for a chair, but you spend more time in this chair than in your bed or your car. If you can find one used, you should try because they are very durable. If you have back pain issues, consider getting a good chair to situate you correctly at your computer.
