My introduction to the SD Card came when I bought my last computer about 3 years ago as it can read them from a panel on the front of it. I liked the fact that I could also use it in the printer I bought at the same time and then later my digital camera. Yep all 3 devices will use the same little card.

Many Uses

I can take pictures on my digital camera and go directly to my printer if I so choose or I can slide the card into my computer and download the pictures to my harddrive. This 1 gig SD Card from Lexar will hold roughly 2300 pictures while in my camera in .jpg format. The very same card will also fit into my Nintendo Wii for saving game data. The one in my Wii is only a 512mb card but it is nice to know I can put the 1 gig card in there if I need too.

SD Cards hold the memory even when they are turned off so that is good. They can also damage easy if your not careful with them. My Lexar came with a little carry case to protect it from damage. They have little gold contacts on the end by which they transfer the information on them to the device it is installed into. They are about the size of a postage stamp but Giants in what they can hold on them.

Some devices such as cameras will format them in order to hold the data. The files/pictures can be deleted and the card written over many times with no ill effects to the card. I bet I have stored and deleted at least a 100 times on this card I have now and it is right at 3 years old.

They also have a little safety switch built right into them. There is a little slide that you can move to the secure mode which prevents data from being deleted. A nice little feature if you want to make sure that your data is safe.

SD Cards do not have a very fast transfer rate and Lexar has solved that. They now have what they call the Professional version which has a transfer speed rated at 133x, which is supposed to give you faster reaction times when taking digital pictures. This will allow you to take pictures as fast as you can click the button, instead of waiting for the normal SD Card to capture the info. It takes advantage of a cameras ability to transfer 20mb per second and keeps up with the camera.

Bottom Line

The SD Card comes in a variety of sizes such as 128mb, 256mb, 512mg, 1 gig and 2 gig to fit any need you might have. They also come in 2 sizes of the card itself, the SD card of which I am reviewing and a Mini-SD Card such as those in cell phones, my LG VX-8100 has a 512mg Mini-SD Card in it.

SD Cards are made by many different manufacturers but I prefer the Lexar because I am familiar with it. I had a Sandisc SD Card but it would not take the format in my digital camera for some reason. A friend told me he used Lexar and never had any problems with it so I bought one. I also have a Lexar Jump Drive but that is another review ;-)
