into movies that tell a great story, character-lover
Clint Eastwood keeps on climbing in the world of film directing. Some more recent successes are Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby. Letters From Iwo Jima follows Flags of Our Fathers and looks at the interior of Iwo Jima where the Japanese are holed up and they realize the holes will become their tombs. Eastwood decides that telling the story from the Japanese viewpoint requires a realistic approach so the majority of the film is in Japanese with English subtitles. We saw this last night after DVRing it last week. I don't know what was edited to fit the time frame, but it was about 3.5 hours. — — The most disappointing thiing was the subtitles. No, not because it was subtitled, but the actual words on the screen. They were too small to read easily, and they too often changed before we could finish reading the dialogue.
