Quick View: I am a big fan of Leslie Sansone's walk workouts and love buying her latest ones. I bought a package deal that included, among other things, this pedometer. It works but the talking part is ridiculous. I would never buy this on its own.

About the Leslie Sansone Talking Pedometer

This pedometer does the following:

ANNOUNCES STEPS & DISTANCE

* Counts and announces up to 99,999 steps
* Measures and announces total distance traveled
* Plays melodies in sync with your walking speed
* Announces current time
* Has an alarm for use as reminder

This little, very light pedometer is easy to set. You just enter your weight and stride length and you're ready to use it. It's pink and silver and looks and feels cheap. But it does work. It comes with a waist clip that stays securely on my waistband.

When I work out, the step counter does count my steps but it is very sensitive so it counts higher than my actual steps even if I'm just moving a bit but not actually walking. It has a 24 hour time clock on it and an alarm that I can't figure out how to program.

Now, about the talking thing. I am moderately hearing impaired but, when I wear my hearing aids, I can hear better than most people. A sample of how the woman's voice sounds is this: Go under water and then cover your mouth. Then speak quietly. That's the quality of the voice. It's nearly inaudible. I had my husband and kids listen and they had a terrible time figuring out what the voice was saying and confirmed that it is way too low as well as way too intelligible to be of any benefit.

You have to press the "talk" button to hear what the lady in the pedometer has to say or else it will not talk. I just don't push the talk button. If you want, you can hear how many steps you walked and even play some very tinny, very soft melodies. I guess if you're REALLY hard up for workout music, you can use those melodies but come on, tinny, low volumed canned pedometer melodies? I think I would prefer to listen to the music on my head.

I have never gotten the thing to tell me how many miles I have walked - just steps. But I can see how many steps I walked by looking at the screen. There is no backlight and no calorie burned function.

Essentially, this is a novelty pedometer. It will count your steps and be more or less in the ballpark but other than that, it isn't good for much else. I bought it with a package that contained a great new DVD, a stretch band, and a walking CD for about $17.00. Non members of Leslie's site can buy the package for around $20.00. You can buy the pedometer alone for around $14.00 if you're a member of Leslie's Walk Club or $16.00 if you're not. It makes obvious sense to buy the package, especially since the DVD and stretchie are awesome.

My Viewpoint

This is a novelty pedometer. The talking part is just awful and unnecessary. The melodies are so bad and tinny that I doubt anyone would ever use them to work out to. It does count steps and, if you're not picky about exactly how many steps you walked and just want a ballpark figure, this pedometer will give you that. It feels cheap and I sense it will quit on me at any given time. This is the first Leslie Sansone product I have bought that I was disappointed with. 2 stars. Not worth the money. You can buy a great Omron pedometer for about the same price and get real quality.

I have something different, but every time it talks it scares the crap out of me. Never expecting it.

I bought a talking scale once. I chucked it out the window after the first time I used it. I stepped on it and it said to me, "One at a time please!"..........piece of crap!! Great review!!!!

With my luck, I'd buy the talking pedometer only to get the "nagging mother" chip:
"Look both ways before you cross the street." "Are you wearing clean underwear?" "I told you a million times to tie your shoes before leaving the house." "Why can't you come in out of the rain?" ...

Yeah, I haven't found a talking anything to really be decent. We had a talking clock and we had no idea what time it was ever. the guy was so muffled!

Thanks for the great review, Patty! This is the beauty of ViewPoints, that we get to learn from each other's experiences. Frankly, I have real reservations about any "talking" gadgets!
