Our three boys 9, 7 and 4 are at a stage where they are really into building with Legos.  We have been to the Legoland in San Diego about four times over the last five years and generally have a good time.  Miniland (which replicate buildings and cityscapes with Legos) is always our favorite destination. So, when one of the first Legoland Discover Centers in the U.S. opened in Schaumburg, IL, a forty minute drive from our house, and the weather started turning cold, we decided to try it out.   Unfortunately we were disappointed.

The highlight of the trip came in the first 5 minutes when we saw the Chicago version of miniland complete with the John Hancock Tower, Millenium Park, Stone Container and about 30 other buildings.  We were disappointed that they did not have Wrigley field, but it was still cool to see the city we love in Legos. They have the lights set to move it from day to night every few minutes.

After some ooing and ahhing at these buildings, the experience mostly went downhill.  The Jungle Experience was pretty lame and the Lego factory was painfully lame (and the person "working it" was VERY strange).  The dragon roller coaster was so slow we could have pushed it.  It was not a roller coaster it was basically a train for very little kids (4 and under).  We were done in about two hours.

Fortunatley we bought tickets from a site (trustedtours.com) that gave us the kids tickets for free with each adult ticket.

The 4-D movie was pretty cool and the kids liked it.  The workshop where they can build Lego cars was fun but if it was crowded would be really annoying.

And of course there is the Lego store where you will inevitably buy something for your Lego obsesses kids.

So we went, we had a good time, we were disappointed and will probably not be back.  On one last positive note, there are some good family friendly restaurants nearby.  Big Bowl, Shaw's, Chipotle, and Mangianos are there at Woodfield Mall just a short walk away.

How disappointing, but sounds like y'all made the best of it. And got to spend time with the kids.

Hey, interesting review. Sorry that the place itself isn't as much fun as you guys had expected. Do you and your boys also like the Lego video games?
