The Web site, www.leapingbunny.org takes the guess work out of knowing what products are truly animal friendly. This Web site is the work of the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC) to give consumers the information they need to know if household product or cosmetics are not tested on animals. The CCIC launched their "Leaping Bunny" campaign in 1996 as a way for the public to know from independent testing and certification that a company did not test its product on animals.
Animal testing tortures and kills thousands of animals for no reason. Shampoos, detergents and make-up do not need this kind of testing to prove it is safe. Some European Union countries have banned all animal testing on cosmetics. It is not required under FDA or the Consumer Product Safety Commission to use animal testing for household products or cosmetics.
If your shampoo or laundry detergent is not manufactured by a company listed on the leapingbunny.org Web site, it was tested on animals. Many companies themselves do not test their product on animals, but their suppliers may use animal testing. This is why the only definitive way to know is to check the list kept by the CCIC.
The CCIC certification program is the only way to know for sure if what you are buying is cruelty free of not. Some companies actually have the "leaping bunny" logo on their products, so you can tell immediately you are buying from a reputable company. You can download and print out the pamphlet online and take it with you when you go shopping. Stop the cruelty! If companies who support animal testing lose money, they will change their ways. The power lies in the hands of all consumers.
If your favorite products are not on the list, write or call the manufacturer and ask them to be certified cruelty free by the CCIC. If a company has on its label, not tested on animals, they are trying to appear to be cruelty free when they may not be. The CCIC also has hints about what to say in your letter and other helpful information for you to use. Remember, knowledge is power!
