I bought the Leapster L Max portable learning system about 3 years ago for my autistic and special needs son. One of the best purchases i've made!
It's a little pricey at about $75 for the unit, and $20 per cartridge, but well worth every penny.
It is a fun learning toy- which disguises itself as a "gaming device", but without all the mindless play that comes with traditional games. I always said i'd never be one of those mothers that lets her children carry around game boys and become addicted to xboxes and whatnot that lead to hours of gaming. So this leapster was the right choice for me. All the games are educational in some way shape or form, yet still lets a child learn to problem solve and feel as though they are getting a treat by playing a "game". The cartridges are geared towards many different age levels so this product can easily grow with your children.
It's also pretty durable. Our device has been dropped on hardwood floors countless times! I cringe everytime I hit the on button wondering if it survived the latest fall- but inevitably it works everytime thus far!
I highly recommend this leapster lmax (which you can also use cords to attach to the tv and view full screen).
