LeapFrog Leapster L Max Handheld Learning Game System Review Summary

Educational toys are preferred by most parents and the Leap Frog Leapster L Max Handheld Learning Game System is one toy that earns most parents’ approval. The reason our reviewers like the Leap Frog Leapster L Max Handheld Learning Game System is because of its use as an educational teaching aid that is great for preschool age children. They also like its portability for those times when you’re on the go. Leap Frog Leapster is “Education Disguised as a Durable, Fun, Brightly Colored Video Game” and reviewers love its ability to keep children entertained. Some of the few negative comments include “Good, but I Have Seen Better”, mainly due to the fact that the batteries don’t last long and adding new games can get costly. But with all things considered, the Leap Frog Leapster is a very good Learning Toy that is admired by parents and children alike.

My boys are 4 and 8. Like most brother, they have a love hate relationship. For the longest time, my older son having game-boys encouraged the hate in their relationship. They fought over this little game player all the time. But when my youngest was allowed to play, he would would get frustrated so...

This is a nice toy, but I am not sure if given a choice if I would buy Vtech Handheld again or the competitor.  The first problem is that the batteries go way too fast!  Pretty much forcing you to buy the battery charger.  I have not experienced that with the competitor product.  The games are good... review »

Bought this for my 3 yr old at xmas.  Bought many games to go with and my son loves them!  Even the games that are above his age level he finds interesting and at least tries them!

Definately need to have the battery pack to recharge the system w/o buying batteries!  A 3 yr old can leave the thing on and burn thru batteries fast!

Leapfrog.com has good deals to make it more cost effective for buying games.  Dont recommend buying them at a retail store when u can get them for 1/2 that online!

My daughter has had this since before starting kindergarten and we have loved the availability of games a differing skill levels and age appropriate content.  The games are actually pretty fun, because of course, Mom and Dad had to try it out to demonstrate how to do things when she was smaller.   She will play with it when we are travelling in the car and it really cuts down on "Are we there yet?"  It doesn't take the place of reading stories and books, but it helps set the foundation for skills like sounding out letters, counting, basic math skills.  The adapter is great for saving on batteries... review »

I was looking for something to keep my daughter occupied while i ran errands.  Many of my friends bought nintendo gameboys.  My three year old was not able to play these but she could play another little friends leapster.  So we went one step up got an l-max.  She loves it and she has learned how to write her letters.  Now i do not have to stop and buy a thousand treats in the mall to keep her from turning into a terrible three year old monster.  I really did not buy it because of the educational aspect but that has been a wonderful bonus.  If you have a child that is not the most tech savvy... review »

I saw this Leapfrog item and knew it would be great for my daughter. The Leapfrog Leapster learning game is great for learning but is also great for taking in the car. I found it on sale but it can be pricey. My daughters loves it. She takes it every where. I like it cause it doesn't have to be hooked up to a tv or computer. Next trip this is defintely going with us. Will be buying the case so we won't lose the games. Since things always seem to come up missing. Another great Leapfrog item!!!

This electronic toy is a very interesting, educational device.  There are many, various cartridges available to entertain all pre-schoolers and into the lower elementary grades.  It is wonderful to see a child intently pushing buttons and then giggling with delight at the response from this little device.  And all the time they are learning to read, spell, basic math skills while developing an active imagination and finger dexterity.  It is a wonderful introduction to the world of electronic games and computers.  It can easily be considered a child's first teacher, after Mom.

We have two boys who each have the Leapster L-Max.  Honestly, I thought there would be a huge benefit of the L-Max vs. the regular Leapster but there was no real difference.  When put on a tv screen the graphics are signicantly more digital-looking but since our 4 and 6-year-olds don't know the difference in graphics quality they enjoy playing on the tv screen or hooked up to the DVD player screen in our minivan.  Most of the time they are just playing the games on the actual handheld Leapster though.  Definately buy the recharging adapter so you aren't wasting money on batteries.  We take...

I like the size of this product but compared to the leap pad and leap pad jr., this gaming system is a lot smaller and really is only for one person viewing it. The window is small and dark at side angles when not looking directly at it. My daughter got one of these this past summer and she never plays the separate game.. there is no place to store it and its easy to lose because its so small. She mostly plays the paint game that comes with the leapster. It would be better if there was a place to store the games. Also, the flap that protects the window comes off easy and is in the way. Ours is... review »

I purchases my two children the LeapFrog Leapsters about 3 years ago for educational purposes. The system offered games with popular characters from TV children programs that were also educational. One of the teachers of my child recommended to buy the LeapFrog Leapster to help with a particular subject in school. I can actually say we had to pry this educational toy from their hands. This little toy helped our children to focus and have fun learning math, reading, and spelling. The great thing about this LeapFrog Leapster is that there are so many different games to choose from. This product is...

I bought the original Leapster with "Pet Pals" game for my 2 year old daughter.  I had tried other Leap Frog products in the past and was pleased.  I wasn't sure how this compared to other systems.   I feel this is one of the BEST products on the market for preschool educational toys.

PROS: its handheld so makes it great for use in the car and even when sitting at the doctors office.  The games come in large variety of skills to practice, and target essential preschool skills, reading, math, and writing (letters - even handwriting!!).  Priced right, inexpensive compared to Nintendo and...

I bought the Leapster several years ago when it first came out, and it was one of the best toy purchases I have ever made.  My daughter was four then.  She is now eight and continues to play with it today.  I simply by new age appropriate cartridges and the Leapster keeps up with her growing mind.  She thinks she is just having fun, but I know she is learning a lot from this item too.  She also has a Nintendo Gameboy Advanced and she tends to choose the leapster over it.  I like that it runs on batteries because we travel a lot.  I can easily put spare batteries in the car or backpack and... review »

I really questioned this purchase. It seemed like a lot of money to spend on a small child & did not think it would withstand much abuse. Was I wrong! This thing is ticking away years later and now satisfying 2 kids. My daughter started to use it when she was 2. This machine has been dropped down the stairs numerous times. The stylus cord did eventually break, but that is okay, it works great as a touch screen & the kids preferred to use it as such anyway.

The games are fun and educational. I have been slow at creating a great library of games, but the older games seem to continue to keep my...

The Leapster L-Max comes with a variety of software, most of which is aimed at giving kids exposure to or practice with the basics in Math and English. Cartridges can be purchased for anywhere from $19.99 to $29.99. Games for younger kids review letters, phonics, and addition and subtraction concepts, and encourage creativity and fun with art and I-Spy activities.  Games for older kids review mutiplication tables, division, and social studies. Systems are sold with a connector that allows you to plug the L-Max into your TV and let your kids play on the 'big screen'.

Only downside: if your kid...

The Leapster L-Max System was a great purchase for my child (age 4).  The games have grat leveling so that as the child progresses, they continue to be challenged!  We actually have both the leapster and L-Max systems (bought Leapster over a year ago - now leave it at grandparents house with some games) but wanted to have a system that could be seen on the television to give an added functionality as well as portability.  The L-Max can be used on the television or as a portable game system and on each there are some differences in what the child sees, so it's actually interesting and great for...

I bought two leapsters - one for my 5 year old and one for my 7 and 9 year olds to share.  One year later, the now 8 and 10 year olds never pick theirs up.  The game choice is very limited and now that they have the Didi version out, i wonder if they will even make new games for the leapster.  For the money, I would recommend a Nintendo DS - HUGE range of games for all ages.  The price of the Leapster game is no cheaper than other handheld game systems, so for the money i spent, i have a game system that will only be enjoyed for about 2 years.  I have bought the Nintendo DS systems for both... review »
