This electronic toy is a very interesting, educational device. There are many, various cartridges available to entertain all pre-schoolers and into the lower elementary grades. It is wonderful to see a child intently pushing buttons and then giggling with delight at the response from this little device. And all the time they are learning to read, spell, basic math skills while developing an active imagination and finger dexterity. It is a wonderful introduction to the world of electronic games and computers. It can easily be considered a child's first teacher, after Mom.
This toy can be taken along anywhere. In the car, it can keep them busy for hours. It is small enough to keep them entertained and happily occupied while waiting in the doctor's office and other boring places.
The only drawbacks I see is possibly the cost of the cartridges, but any quality toys are expensive. Also the cartridges are small so the child must be taught to put them in the proper place after use so that they don't get lost in the furniture, etc.
I am a grandmother of two. My four year old grandson has had a Leapster for about one and a half years and he is reading at the second grade level. I'm sure it's not all because of Leapster, but I'm sure it didn't hurt. My two year old granddaughter sometimes borrows her brother's Leapster but I think she's a little young for one of her own. Finally, I would recommend this toy to anyone looking for a great gift that gives their little one a head start in learning.
