Lean Mean Thirteen  —

LEAN MEAN THIRTEEN by Janet Evanovich ($27.95, St. Martin's Press)  Thirteenth in the Stephanie Plum series (duh)   Rating A   Stephanie's ex-husband Dickie Orr can still push her buttons.  She tries to avoid contact with him, especially as he is having a fling with her arch-rival Joyce Barnhardt.  She only went to his office as a favor to Ranger, who needed a "bug" planted.  The trip had enough disaster potential that in addition to Lula, office manager Connie went along.  They pretended to need help forming a business, but when Stephanie saw a family heirloom, she got a tad irritated.  That's an understatement, and the result was she left with her aunt's clock.  She didn't go quietly, though, and when Dickie goes missing with blood in his apartment, she is the primary suspect.   Joyce, who can smell wealth a mile away, is afraid Stephanie is hiding her potential meal ticket.  Joyce takes to following Stephanie, and zapping her with a stun gun.  In the midst of this action, Stephanie has a few FTA's to bring in.  Her job, after all, is bond enforcement, though she admits freely she's not very good at it.   She has a grave robber to follow, and though it's very cold this time of year, sometimes corpses have enough jewelry to make it worth freezing ones posterior.  Lula reluctantly accompanies her.  Lula is less reluctant to go to the home of a taxidermist.  This guy takes taxidermy to a new level.  I'm not going to say much more about it, other than to beg that he be a series regular.    Stephanie still has car troubles, but with both Ranger and Morelli on her side, how can she lose.  She's a winner, and so is this very strong entry in a series that will hopefully go to infinity and beyond.
