Lawry's Seasoned Salt  —

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was a famous architect and designer who also had a great gift for thought-provoking remarks.  "God is in the details" he said and the rest of us have been jockeying to figure out exactly what he meant by that ever since.  Everybody has their own opinion but my personal "take" is that to concentrate on those infinitessimal details that most of us don't bother with is a Divine example worthy of those who strive for greatness in anything we do, especially talented architects and other creative people including great cooks.  The true integrity and character of any project or structure depends upon its smallest parts and this is true of not only great buildings but great food as well.

Back in 1938, Lawrence L. Frank, founder of the first Lawry's the Prime Rib Restaurant, appreciated the importance of details and showed it by inventing in his own home kitchen the family's famous seasoned salt used to enhance the flavor of the fine prime ribs and steaks which have been their specialty ever since.  It a detail that made all the difference and today Lawry's Seasoned Salt is an honored ingredient not only in the Lawry restaurants but in millions of other domestic kitchens.  Manufactured and distributed by Thomas J. Lipton Company, this delightful product has become known as "America's most popular formulated seasoning."

STATS:

Of course, plain white table salt is important too but let's face it, a 1/4 tsp. serving of Morton's Table Salt contains 590 mg. of sodium and that's it.  Perfect for some foods but limited in how it can enhance the flavor of certain things.  A 1/4 tsp. serving of Lawry's Seasoned Salt, on the other hand, contains "only" 380 mg. sodium (and zero fat, sugars, carbs, or calories) along with a delightful bouquet of ingredients including sugar, paprika, turmeric, onion and garlic.  There is no MSG and the reddish color is provided not by an artificial dye but by Paprika Oleoresin.

TASTE TIP:

The use of Lawry's Seasoned Salt should not be limited to the rich meats, chops, and ribs it was designed for.  Its true magic and real importance lies in its ability to enhance the flavor of healthier things to eat -- things which might seem a bit bland otherwise.  If there is a fuss-budget in your household who swears that they will never enjoy hard-boiled (or any other) sort of eggs, cheese, cottage cheese, steamed veggies or broiled chicken breasts, just sprinkle a little Lawry's Seasoned Salt (along with a touch of coarse black pepper) on to change the food they don't like into something they will crave.  We are wise to remember that -- as with all seasonings -- a little goes a long way.  As Mies van der Rohe also said:  "Less is more."

That's the way I read reviews incidentally too. I don't just plow from one to the other, but pick out things at random. Your's always have my priority!

You're funny! It was no big deal what I got but you know I had an old $50 Pier One gift card which I redeemed MyPoints for about three years ago! I've been letting old gift cards stack up and now with the economy going downhill, I can see that is not such a great idea. Thank God, Pier One is still in business and I was able to use at least part of the card for nifty new soup mugs -- you know, those big HUGE cups with handles that you can eat soup, stew, or chili out of. They really are neat. So I got them and then walked over to T.G.I.F. where I used a $25 gift card, also redeemed from MyPoints.

It's nice to finally be making headway, isn't it? Neither you nor I have extra space to collect stuff we might not need anymore. I'm careful about not getting rid of TOO much but I took three things down to the give-away table in the basement tonight and I'm finally being able to FIND SOME THINGS that have been missing a long time.

Well, catch ya later!

Love, your Cuz

OK. I give up. What did you buy at Pier One? It's late and I'm trying to get used to my "new" laptop. Glad to hear you're decluttering. It's nice not to be alone. I've got stuff ready for Goodwill tomorrow, but it will be a long time before I make a dent in this. Everything seems so precious when you get ready to toss it. I love to swing through your reviews (and everyone else's) without a plan. Sometimes I start on page three or page five. These things really don't get very "old". See you later today (Weds.)

You missed it because it is BURIED under a ton of others. PLEASE don't ever think I expect you to start reading all those reviews of mine! I just mentioned the coleslaw thing because I guess we were talking about comparing a good item to something else or SOMETHING! I've got to tell you, DECLUTTERING is in full swing here! I finally found the address book I lost more than a year ago!

Catch ya later! I'm going over to Pier One today to use a gift card if they are still in business before they head off into the sunset.

How ever did I miss that review? Maybe it was before my time and I'll have to look waaaaay back. I LOVE coleslaw and should probably be snacking on it instead of chocolate. (Though a proportional equivalent might have me airborn.)

I like to slip a little twist in there every now and then. One of my other reviews compares KFC cole slaw to POLITICS! HEY, I shouldn't have mentioned KFC cole slaw. Now I want some!

What I like is that you educate us about more than just the salt. The two guys who ran Lawry's originally have died, but much of their money is supporting opera and public television arts programming in Los Angeles.

Oh my God, a whole lifetime without seasoned sal! My Dad taught me a lot about cooking (since my Mom died when I was a little girl) and he told me all about Lawry's Seasoned Salt. I hope you like it!

rulistenin wrote on Nov 8, 2008 at 1:25PM

Okay, so I never use seasoned salts, etc... but, your review alone makes me tempted to give it a try. ;-)

I love the introduction to your review. Who would know you could go from grand structures to salt ;+) I also like Lawry's but for some reason months ago I switched to Old Bay seasoning.

What an interesting way to start this review! Very clever. Very good review, Anna.
I've tried this product and it tasted good. I enjoy making my own blends though.
