Law and Order: SVU —

A snippet!: "In the criminal justice system, sexually based offenses are considered especially heinous. In New York City, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the special victims unit. These are their stories [dun, dun - aka gavel noise]." Yep, I've memorized the introduction to the Law & Order: SVU show. Please, stifle your laugh.

The finer print: If the Emmy Award and People's Choice Awards that Law & Order: SVU won in 2007 do not convince you that the show is worth an hour of your time every Tuesday at 9pm Central, then that's what the finer print from me is for!

As mentioned, Law & Order: SVU chronicles the crimes and the lives of the detectives who solve them in the Special Victims Unit of the New York PD. The main characters, Detectives Stabler and Benson, are played by Christopher Meloni and Mariska Hargitay, respectively. Detectives John Munch (Richard Belzer) and Fin Tutuola (Ice-T) support Stabler and Benson on solving cases.

Each episode of Law & Order: SVU is different than the one before it, although occasionally there will be a two-part cliff-hanger case split in to two episodes. Either way, no two cases are the same, and viewers will get hooked to Law & Order: SVU because of the mystery. You will be compelled to watch because you want to know what happens to the "bad guys." Don't try to solve the case, though. Law & Order: SVU never fails to surprise me by adding an unsuspecting twist at the end of an episode.

The crimes will also suck you in to the show. The crimes may seem unbelieveable, but many of them are adapted from real events. In fact, I've often recognized portions of a Law & Order: SVU episode from major national events. (There is definitely a Michael Jackson-esque reference in one episode from an early season. I mean, what else explains the Playland a criminal on the show builds in his house?)

Law & Order: SVU is not for young audiences; the crimes all relate to sex and brutality! The dialogue is explicit and disturbing images do appear on the screen. The subject matter is appropriate for high school audiences and above.

The verdict [dun, dun]: There are a few things I appreciate about Law & Order: SVU that I think other people will enjoy, too (other than seeing Detective Stabler without his shirt on, of course). Law & Order: SVU incorporates suspense and mystery in to every episode. The plot is easy to follow. It is not necessary to see every Law & Order: SVU episode in sequential order in order to follow the storyline; episodes are their own individual storyline, on the whole. However, there are subplots, usually related to Detectives Stabler or Benson's pasts or the sexual tension between them, that thread through an entire or multiple seasons. I would recommend watching the Law & Order: SVU series from the beginning, but it is definitely not required! I think this noncommittal relationship with the show will appeal to everyone. If you do intend to watch Law & Order: SVU from the beginning, then you need to get started. It is in its ninth season already.

Law & Order: SVU gets five stars from me for its plots (and good-looking actors). It is one of those shows that will never fail to entertain audiences! [dun, dun]

I am a big fan of SVU but Elliott and Olivia are the two characters that really make the show. [at least for me] It just wouldn't be the same without them together. We got a glimpse into what it would be like when Olivia was sent off for a while and Stabler was paired up with Dani... just didn't have the same chemistry.

I think deep down you're a Britney fan too, Vincent! You're just too afraid to admit it like so many other people. Haha. ;) I totally agree. I feel as though the writers of SVU are gradually trying to kill Stabler off. I will be SO sad if he leaves the show - or any of the other characters for that matter!!

Ahhh, one of my favorite shows. But doesn't it seem like the writers have it out for poor Elliot? Nicely done!

Many good points here. I don't see it often but enjoy it when I do.

I DVR SVU if I'm not able to watch it. I don't want to miss an episode of Detective Stabler. :-P I also watch the reruns on USA. I can't remember the last time I had Oreo cookies. I have Celiac Disease and can't have gluten/wheat foods. Ugh! I've added you on my friends list. How much longer is your internship with Viewpoints? I know Jolie and Meredith will miss you!! ;-) ~Krista Lynn

I'm glad I've found a fellow SVU fan. My sorority sisters and I watched it every week back in college. It's the best... especially when paired w/ some Oreos & milk during viewing. Haha.

SVU is my favorite Law & Order show. Detective Stabler & Benson are awesome characters. The show gets better each year. I love the 1st paragraph of your review. [dun, dun!]. Great review!
