Lars and the Real Girl Review Summary

Reviewers find Lars and the Real Girl "sweet and moving, though not too much like real life." Ryan Gosling (The Notebook and Fracture) stars as Lars, "a good-natured, lonely 27-year-old man who is painfully shy and yearns for human contact and companionship," and turns up at his brother's home with his new girlfriend, "a high-end, anatomically correct sex doll." Reviewers note their initial impressions that Lars and the Real Girl "sounded silly and sophomoric" were wrong, as "the actors played their parts tenderly, subtlety ... not played for the broad laugh." Just so you don't get the wrong idea of Lars, he's a religious man and isn't doing anything inappropriate with this doll, instead having "her dressed conservatively in bulky sweaters," and moving "her around in her wheelchair." A few reviewers didn't get the charm of Lars and the Real Girl, but overall, most found it funny and sweet.

Lars is a good-natured, lonely, 27 year old man who is painfully shy, and yearns for human contact and companionship. When he shows up at his brother's home with his new "girlfriend" everyone is pleasantly surprised. The surprise truns to confusion when it turns out the girlfriend, Bianca, is a "real girl" - a high-end, anatomically correct sex doll. To Lars, though, Bianca is very much a person: he has conversations with her, has invented a whole life story for her, serves her a plate at dinner (which he eats for her), and generally treats her the way any nice, young man would treat a… read full review »

I'm so glad I trusted my local movie critic. Frankly, the premise of Lars and the Real Girl sounded silly and sophomoric to me. But the critic was right to tell me that the actors played their parts tenderly, subtlely--that, while there were many good laughs over the absurdity of the situation, the scenes were not played for the broad laugh. Lars is a poor, suffering fellow and we begin to love his caring community and to wish him well. — The reviewer who gave away the ending "so you won't have to see it" missed the whole point. Movies aren't reality tv that we watch to see… read full review »

Do unto others as they did to you.  The movie is somewhat charming and corny at the same time. The movie has a group of friends and family that ridicule Lars for being too self-absorbed and not spending more time with others. To "get even" with them,Lars in turn buys a life-size plastic doll which he carts around everywhere he goes,ie ,restaurants, church, famiy gatherings, etc. He makes everyone interact with her to the point of ridiculousness, yet he does make a point. Lars uses the plastic imported doll as an interim "blankie" until he is ready to befriend a human person. The movie… read full review »

Lars gets a life size doll instead of a real girlfriend. A very religious man, he does not have sex with the doll but instead has her dressed conservatively in bulky sweaters and moves her around in her wheelchair. Everyone in town goes along with pretending she is a real person. It's very hard to believe that nobody out of a whole town full of people would harrass Lars for this. Real life society is not that kind to quirky folks. However in the end it is a feel-good movie and it is through the town's intervention that Lars is able to move beyond his connection with a doll to perhaps connect… read full review »

Lars and The Real Girl was not a typical movie by any means. The story was not at all realistic, but as soon as I put that aside I was able to enjoy the movie. Ryan Gosling was excellent in this film. He made the plight of Lars very personal. Over all I probably wouldn't watch this again, but it was still a good… read full review »
