Lake Powell leaves you Speechless!
I wish I had a dollar for every time one of six people on our boat said "Look at that!" while boating Lake Powell! One of America's most stunning destinations, Lake Powell is really only appreciated by being on it. Yes, you can get a "feel" for it by gazing down at her rocky shores from a vantage point on land, but until you're boating next to 150' high sandstone cliffs, you don't really understand her majesty.
Lake Powell Boat Rentals
Family vacations can be tricky when it comes to deciding what to do at a destination. Not this time. Rent a power boat for the day ($440-$610, plus gas); they hold "up to 8 passengers,"....but be advised, our 20' power boat would have felt crowded with more than the six people and one cooler we had on board. What a fantastic way to see the lake! Once you're on the water and can get near the magnificent rock formations that line the shore, you really get the full impact of the scene. If your budget allows, rent a houseboat for the entire week and live aboard. This is THE way to experience the lake.
There is a full range of sizes, and the most luxurious ones are surprisingly decadent, with wine storage, plasma tvs, luxury appliances, gas grills, dual steering stations, and a top deck with hot tub and full bar.
Don't Miss Navajo Canyon
You can pick up your boat as early as 8 am and only have to have it back, gassed up, by 5 pm. That leaves a nice long day for exploring Lake Powell. The best thing we did was to go up the longest canyon near the west end, which was our departure point. Navajo Canyon snakes and turns further and further away from the lake, and with each turn, the rocks change shape and color. All the while the water is coke-bottle green, just beautiful. You'll have so much fun just looking at textures and perceived shapes, finding caves and unusual erosion marks, taking photos, and just soaking in the beauty of your surroundings. A picture is worth 1000 words. Go to google images and see what I mean.
Libby's Hot Tips: Boating means being prepared. Take warm clothing in case your boat conks out. Not likely at all, but you will be desperate if you're trapped in the cold desert air without protection at night. Take plenty of water, some snacks, and a flashlight if you have one. Make sure your phones are charged and take them with you. Put on lots of sunscreen; water reflects more sun than land. Put sunscreen on your ears, bald spots, feet and the back of your neck. Reapply! Wear polarized glasses for the most pleasure.
There's no better way to see Lake Powell than from a boat. Rent one and ENJOY!
The Bottom Line: Libby LOVES It!
