About Laci Le Beau Super Dieter's Tea Bags, Cranberry Twist

This box of tea contained 24 bags. I brewed 12 ounces of water and let a bag sit in the hot water for well over two minutes as instructed. The scent was fragrant and I was looking forward to this new tea. The instructions say that one should drink six ounces after dinner and the other six the next day after dinner meaning you get two servings per bag. But only six ounces? I am used to huge mugs of tea. Still, I forged ahead.

The taste was decent. I could pick up hints of cranberry and something earthy that wasn't BAD but not as good as I was expecting. I added a touch of sugar to take the edge off and it was a decent little cup of tea. About an hour after drinking the tea, I got stomach cramps. They started out slight and built up to somewhat painful. Nothing came of it so I forgot about it. The next day, I drank the remaining six ounces of tea. The cramps came back almost an hour to the minute after I finished the tea and this time, I got the runs. BAD!

I didn't really connect the tea with the incident because I have IBS and sometimes my stomach flares up. But after four days of drinking the tea, getting the cramps an hour later, and having diarrhea, it was clear the tea was the culprit. In four days I lost five pounds. But it was just water and the fact that I had no appetite from feeling so sick.

The warning on the insert says,"This product contains Tinnevelly Senna (leaf). Read and follow directions carefully. Do not use if you have or develop diarrhea, loose stools, or abdominal pain because Senna may worsen these conditions and be harmful to your health. Consult your physician if you have frequent diarrhea or if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication or have a medical condition."

I looked up Tinnevelly and, to my surprise, not only does it cause stomach cramps and discomfort but can cause potassium deficiency. I already have a potassium deficiency and am being treated for it. Along with potassium, this ingredient can cause electrolyte disturbances which can cause irregular heart rhythms and illness (Deaths have been caused due to electrolyte imbalances.). Potassium is just one of the electrolytes that this tea can affect.

I immediately tossed the tea away. Losing weight or maintaining weight is great but only if done in a healthy way. There is NO WAY I am going to risk electrolyte deficiency. The stomach cramps and diarrhea alone are reason to avoid this tea. Who wants to suffer like that and only lose fluids which will be back in their body the next day?

I will never touch this type of tea again. I will stick to my green and normal herbal teas and leave this stuff to the braver people out there.

My Viewpoint

This tea claims to help weight loss and it does. By giving you diarrhea and causing you to flush your system of important vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes you need. Honestly, is it worth it? I say absolutely not. This stuff is uncomfortable at best and dangerous at worst.

Some teas do help with appetite control but apparently this one's claim to fame is to purge your system of all food you just ate for dinner. Bad idea. Especially if you happen to have guests over or drink the tea away from home. 1 star. Your results may vary but please be careful and, if you have a lot of diarrhea, stop drinking the tea before you end up in the hospital.

I have used this tea before, it says on the box that it contains senna, I knew what to expect before using it because I read the whole box, including the ingredients list. I don't have IBS so I didn't have cramps or anything, but it does work as a laxative. It tells you to only have six ounces the first and second nights because the effects of the senna can be so great. I agree with drterrynd's comment below that if you have IBS you should probably make sure you look at the ingredients in all products that you use before you use them and find out which are ok to use. I, too am an avid tea fan. Just drinking green tea before or after meals can help with weight loss. I thought this product was ok, but I would rather just stick to green and white teas.

Anyone who has IBS - Irritable Bowel Syndrome - should NOT be using laxatives. Prolonged diarrhea will cause a loss of electrolytes. However, many people have the opposite problem -- constipation -- which senna will help to correct. As a naturopath, I see many people who don't even realize they are constipated because they have been constipated so long, they just consider it "normal" (for them). The fact is, what goes into the body has to come out. If you eat, you need to have regular bowel movements -- and more than once daily. I see many patients who think that having one bowel movement (BM) every few days is actually "good"! Often, people who have lived with constipation for some time and then finally take a laxative to loosen things up, will experience some diarrhea initially. The key then is to remain regular -- eat plenty of fiber-rich foods, raw fruits & veggies, and lots of water.

Bottom line -- I think the warning on the package is sufficient; but anytime a person has a chronic problem (like IBS) and considers taking any supplement, he/she should consult a naturopathic professional. And asking your M.D. is not necessarily helpful -- most physicians (unless they have a personal interest in diet/nutrition/complementary/integrative and alternative healthcare) get VERY little actual training in this area in medical college. Find a good naturopath who is trained specifically in this area to help you find the best and safest natural treatment for you.

Yes. You are correct that our system needs the vitamins, minerals, fluids and electrolytes.

In response to RudiXeno's comment from Oct 20, 2007 at 6:35AM:

Holy cow! Just spent the mornin' on the pot whilst yacking in the trash can after drinking this tea last night. Lost about 3 lbs! Great stuff if you enjoy empowering your eating disorders!

Wow! That is horrendous. Seems the warnings should be a little more prominent than that.

Geez... this stuff sounds terrible. Thanks for your honesty too!

Depleting electrolytes can't be a good thing.
Thanks for the heads up!

People don't realize senna is a powerful laxative. They think it is harmless but in fact it can be very dangerous as you found out.

Great review. Thanks for the warning. Luckily I'm pretty healthy, but yep, good idea to read all the labels. Thanks.

Good review! It's always a good habit to get into to read labels!

Hey! A really important review here. You don't mess with electrolytes! Thanks Patty.
