La Casa mission - Cozumel, Mexico —

After spending several days and nights with 15 of my closest friends and family members, my fiance and I were ready to spend a slow and relaxing evening by ourselves.  We napped, we showered, and then we asked the doorman at our Cozumel condo for restaurant recommendations.  He suggested La Casa Mission and I have to say that it is probably the best food that I've had on the island.

The restaurant is part of a converted hacienda.  The grounds are basically a park with benches, tables, lush palms, and a few cages of Amazon parrots and Toucans.  When you step onto the grounds of La Casa Mission, you feel like you've stepped back in time and into a tropical, jungle world.

The menu is fairly simple.  There are things like salads, ceviche, queso dip, shrimp cocktail for appetizers. The entrees include garlic seafood (shrimp, fish, lobster), fajitas, filet mignon, Mexican combination, and chicken cordon bleu.  We ordered several appetizers which were all good overall.  The standout was the fish and shrimp ceviche which was excellent! Fajitas were a bit hit at dinner as was the Mexican combination.  Everything was simple but full of flavor.  The whole table agreed that our meal at La Casa Mission was the best Mexican food that we'd had since we landed in Mexico.  Dinners range between $12 and $25.  We once had two plates of fajitas and six beers for $47 which is extremely reasonable compared to the prices of the restaurants popular with most tourists.

The one thing that bothered me was the fact that they keep their parrots in such small cages and without alternate perches or toys.  As the owner of 3 parrots, I was a bit disturbed when I saw the conditions that the Mission parrots endured.  That being said, they were lively, active, and looked very healthy.  Maybe I'll just send them a box of toys and hope for the best?

La Casa Mission is not on the tourist strip in Cozumel.  It's worth the $4 taxi ride, though, for a beautiful setting and excellent food.  We ate there once and then returned back the next day with 7 more people so they could experience just how incredible the whole experience was.  Definitely recommended!
