2008 marks the 100th anniversary of President Lyndon Baines Johnson's birth, so what better time to pay a call on the LBJ Library and Museum? Located here in Austin on 30 acres at the University of Texas, the museum celebrates the "can do spirit" of one of the Lone Star State's favorite sons. While his presidency certainly had its ups and downs, this Texas-sized monument to the man's legacy is pretty awesome.

LBJ described his vision of the place this way:

"It is all here: the story of our time with the bark off. This Library will show the facts, not just the joy and triumphs, but the sorrow and failures, too...I hope that visitors who come here will achieve a closer understanding of the presidency and that young people will get a clearer comprehension of what this nation tried to do in an eventful period of its history."

The official mission statement puts it this way:

"To preserve and protect the historical materials in the collections of the Johnson Library and make them readily accessible; To increase public awareness of the American experience through relevant exhibitions and educational programs; And to advance the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum's standing as a center for intellectual activity and community leadership while meeting the challenges of a changing world."

It is certainly a most impressive place, featuring historical and cultural exhibits, original artwork, with both permanent and travelling exhibits. The most architecturally stunning area of the complex is the Great Hall, with its ceremonial staircase and a five-story, glass-encased view of the archives collection.

There is also a Museum store where visitors can purchase original campaign items (very cool), plus the obligatory souvenirs, books, and other LBJ-related gift items.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of President Johnson's birth, the LBJ Library and Museum is presenting a major exhibit on the space race entitled "To the Moon: The American Space Program in the 1960s." The exhibit runs from August 27, 2008, through July 20, 2009, the 40th anniversary of the moon landing. As Senate majority leader, Johnson co-sponsored the legislation creating NASA, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2008.
