There are a lot of gourmets and gourmands out there who are eager to tell you that Kraft's Velveeta is not REALLY cheese and they are right -- it is a processed cheese food, which is not the same thing. Add in the nutritionists and dieticians who are concerned about the REALLY high fat content (80 calories per ounce with 50 calories from fat) and it is a wonder that Velveeta is still on the shelves. The answer to that is simple: there are a lot of us who ... in spite of everything ... REALLY love the taste of this Kraft mainstay product.
I have appreciated my share of fine REAL cheeses but I have got to admit that one of my guilty pleasures has been Velveeta. In fact, I love this product so much that I had to stop buying it because it was so hard to just eat a little and stop when I should. Imagine my delight then to find Kraft's Velveeta made with 2% Milk. It still isn't the type of thing you should eat too much of, but the fat has been reduced by half and, wonder of wonders, it still tastes delicious. I had a bad experience with Kraft Fat Free American Cheese a few months ago and so was a little apprehensive as I placed a chunk of this new Velveeta in my mouth. You know by now that I would have told you if it wasn't good but honestly, this is delicious and there was no discernible after-taste for me. I fully intend to switch over to buying this newer version of one of my favorite products.
STATS:
Each one-ounce single serving contains 60 calories with 25 calories from fat (as opposed to 50 calories in the original). There are three grams total fat, one and a half grams saturated fat, zero trans fat, ten mg. cholesterol, 410 mg. sodium, four grams total carbs, zero dietary fiber, two grams sugars and five grams protein. In addition are 8% (D.V.) Vitamin A and the 25% Calcium which helped to make this product famous.
TASTE TIP:
As far as I am concerned, Kraft Velveeta made with 2% Milk tastes best when sliced thinly to fill a sandwich made with whole grain bread and Hellmann's Light Mayonnaise. Like the original version, I suspect that all a person would have to do to make a couple of servings of a quick, hot dinner would be to boil a cup of macaroni, drain, and throw in a chunk of Kraft Velveeta made with 2% Milk. I'm taking off a star only because I feel that for a processed cheese food, this product is much too expensive ($4.29 for a one-pound loaf).
To all the gourmets and gourmands out there, what can I add except Don't Knock It Until You've Tried It!
Bon Appetit!
