My sister, PattyTherre, is huge into fitness and nutrition. She knows that I have low blood sugar, high cholesterol and that I don't always eat right. She often suggests nutritional items that I should eat but rarely do I ever remember to pick up those items. Finally, she decided to give me some things to try since I obviously wasn't going to do it on my own. One of the items she gave me was a Kraft - South Beach Living High Protein Cereal Bar. (Peanut Butter Flavor) I have to admit; it tasted quite good and was good for me too.

Kraft - South Beach Living High Protein Cereal Bar

The peanut butter flavor of these high protein cereal bars contains 140 calories, 10 grams of protein and 10 vitamins and minerals. There is 5g of fat (2g saturated, 1.5g polyunsaturated, 1.5g monounsaturated fat), zero cholesterol, 160mg of sodium, 140 mg of potassium, 15g of carbs, 3g of dietary fiber, 6 g of sugars and 3g of sugar alcohol. (The sugar alcohol is used as a sugar substitute. It has fewer calories and abosrbs slower than table sugar. It is considered a safe substance)  These bars come in a variety of flavors such as chocolate, peanut butter, maple nut, cranberry almond, cinnamon raisin. A box of 5 1.23oz. bars costs approximately $3.99 and can be found in most drug and grocery stores.

According to the website, South Beach Living Cereal Bars have twice the protein and 25% less sugar than leading cereal bars. (Comparison based on average protein and sugar values of top 3 cereal bars.)

My Experience

When I took the cereal bar out of the package, it looked pretty good but was a little sticky. It had some peanut butter looking drizzle over the top and the texture resembled a Rice Krispies treat. When I took my first bite, I was pleasantly surprised. It was sweet and indeed had a peanut butter taste. There was a little soy aftertaste but not too bad. The bar was chewy but almost a little too chewy. I felt satisfied after and did seem to have some extra energy. I love the fact that the bars are sturdy enough for me to just pop in my purse without the worry of them being crushed like those soft cereal bars. Whenever I'm feeling a little run down or in need of a snack to keep my low blood sugar from acting up, these are perfect!

My Final Viewpoint

Kraft - South Beach Living High Protein Cereal Bars are flavorful, high in protein and are not too bad in calorie and fat content. They are portable and contain vitamins and minerals. For those reasons, I recommend them and I am giving them a 4 star rating.

I love peanut butter and this sounds like something I would probably enjoy. I will mark as favorites and get me some. Beware, there may be a review coming and from a picky eater, uh oh!! ~Gigi

In response to eatingcookies's comment from Jan 11, 2009 at 11:29PM:

Hi there! (I am the sister who gave Laurie the bar to try.) Yes, these have Malitol as a sweetener because the South Beach Diet is a low carb one. I find that Malitol is less after-tastey and, from what I read, not dangerous like aspartame but I hear ya about artificial sweeteners. I didn't plan to eat these because of that but I am totally hooked on them now!

Why have I not reviewed these? I eat one a day for breakfast almost everyday, sometimes with a little peanut butter on it. I really love these. They have a new variety with 19 grams of protein that I am trying next but they're more expensive. Still, that's a whopper of an amount of protein! I have a few boxes of these bars here. You can have one. :)

My one complaint about these things is the "sugar alcohols" - that means artificial sweeteners, and I just don't like them.
